Amazon headaches

896 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  SA_Soule
Just venting some frustration at Amazon. They are usually extremely helpful but lately I can't seem to find anyone capable of updating the page count on one my books. They all claim it's done and should reflect within 24 hours, then it doesn't, then I tell them, then they say OK we will escalate to our tech team and let you know in 2-5 days. It seems to be a hit or miss of finding the right rep who knows what he/she is doing.

Anyone else have any Amazon headaches to share?

(Overall I still think Amazon has some of the best customer service)

Like you, I find them pretty good. I hope your woes get sorted out soon.

Mine says 480 pages when its probably about 320 pages, but because I formatted my CS book as 8x5.5" it's thrown out the rulebook.

I got them to change it to 320, but the next time the page was updated it reverted to 480 again. I'm certain the length of the book is putting people off buying it. I'm now considering cutting the book into part 1 and part 2 and representing it.
It is hit or miss with support. I was lucky when I first published. Support was spot on and quick. They updated my page count quickly to match the paperback.
I have a couple books under a different pen name that do. not. have. a Look Inside.  I emailed them about this in February, and they're still sitting there without the Look Inside.

They're how-to books, so I had to use their horrible PDF converter, and I am 100% certain that is why they lack the Look Inside, even though they tell me it isn't.  I'm trying to find a way to format them better, because if a how-to doesn't have a preview, nobodyðs going to buy that thing.
After a week of emails, here is their latest response:

"Hello CJ,

I'm very sorry for any frustration this page count issue has caused.

We'll need a little time to look into this. I've reached out to our Website Team to investigate this issue.

We'll contact you with more information by the end of the day on Sunday 22nd of March.

Thanks for your patience."

You would think something as simple as updating a page count would be relatively easy but evidently not  ;D

Slightly off subject--since you're talking about CS--I'm wondering if the estimated pages count changes when you format with 1.5 spacing instead of single spacing. Someone I know who's very good in publishing matters formats her e-books at 1.5 line spacing. As for the print book--yes, they should accept the actual number of pages in the print edition.

Lucky you! I'm having the same issue as I've just added some additonal front and back matter to all my titles, as every single one of them is now showing the print book length rather than the kindle book length. Previously they have alway recalculated when I asked, now they are saying that this is against policy and that the kindle book length will take it's data from the print book length. This is a nightmare for me. My books are full colour, non-fiction with lots of photos, so I always print them in the largest format available to reduce page length to keep the cost down. This makes my kindle books look much shorter than they actually are. I've tried escalating this and hit a brick wall so I'm going to leave it a few days and then raise a new query - you often get different answers at different times!

Have you sent them the PDF file yourself? I send mine to them and it is updated (or added) within a week: https://sellercentral.amazon.com/gp/homepage.html?
