I think they shouldn't be able to count repeat books in the count. To say they have 260,000 books is misleading when 127 are Tom Sawyer, 141 Pride and Prejudice, 57 versions of wuthering heights, 377 of 20,000 leauges under the sea, 54 Treasure Island, and 125 Huckleberry Finn's. I'm sure we could easily go up into the thousands by repeat books. I think this takes away from their integrity in the real #'s, in my opinion. They have a long, long, long way to go to get to "every book". There #'s are very misleading in the number of books they have if you are looking for variety. I read people say they have 260,000 books to pick from and think, "well, that is one way of looking at it" ;)

I personally find it amusing, especially today when so many writers use a computer to write the book.  I suspect most editors use computers to edit the book, and I'd wager ALL of the serious publishers are using a computer to layout for printing.

So, why is it so hard to get a good transfer?  Why aren't MORE books in e-format?

If I'm recalling correctly there were less than 200,000 in November '08.  It does seem like a slow progress, but at least it's progress.

Yeah but 200,000 of the new "books" are short stories, 350,000 are public domain books like "Memoirs of the Life of the Rt. Hon. Richard Brinsley Sheridan Volume 01". The rest are "real books".

That's interesting.

A quarter million compared to 26 million. I'd say Amazon has a ways to go to get those books on the Kindle.
hmm, I wonder how long it would take to get to that point. ::) ::)

Anyone else notice that the total books numbers is going DOWN?  Both of the last two times.

Books - 26,533,785 (March 31)
Books - 26,392,246 (April 6)
Books - 26,329,034 (April 13)

Very weird.  Wonder if it has anything to do with that adult/GLBT search brouhaha thing...

I think that's exactly why. With those books removed from the rankings, they basically don't "exist." As I understand it, even if you search for a specific title, it won't come up.

After all the postings about that, I had to go research it for myself just now.

First, I note that on the left, under Departments -- Books -- it does have a section for gay and lesbian books, with books showing up when you click on that, so they most certainly do exist. So it doesn't make sense that those would be the ones removed from the total count. Maybe the total count doesn't include ones that are out of print? That would explain why the numbers went down.

And then I searched for all the titles of adult literature that I knew (didn't take long, really.... no really!) and both straight and gay ones do come up in the search. I haven't followed the details of the rankings issue, I gather that some of these books are no longer being ranked, but it does seem that all books are still *searchable*, at least. And therefore should be counted as part of the overall number available.
