Hey everyone,
I'm new here. I'm an artist by trade, poet by training, and newly self-published scifi novelist.
Long story short:
I googled, 'how to self publish a novel" and the first thing that popped up was the Self Publishing Podcast.
A year later I'd watched every SPP, SPRT, and STP, and even a BOA or two before I found the Rocking Self Publishing Podcast. The host, Simon, spoke very highly of kboards so I thought I'd check it out. I'd already slogged through most of the publishing process on my own, but I figured better to join late than never.
Some bio:
For a while I wanted to be a professional sailor. One common thread in sailors' lives is odd jobs and multiple streams of income. It's a lifestyle that requires a good deal of money and doesn't generate much in return. I saw a lot of good men with big dreams held back by finances. I decided that I would never have a hobby(aside from sailing) that couldn't generate an income and that I'd never hold a job I didn't love or that tied me down.
I'd studied art for a while and when I moved to the gulf coast to live on my sailboat, I met enough people who painted for a living that it seemed like a real possibility. My website is down today, but you can see my art on my facebook: facebook.com/portapoetry
The new career in the arts inspired me to begin to finish my long-time side project, a post-apocalyptic scifi fantasy novel. In a year the book went from 20k words to 100k. I finished it in Feb of this year. It's called Children of Atlas. It's on kindle, kobo, and smashwords.
I managed to get 50 preorders which turned out to be a mistake because pre-orders don't count for much. I've tried some fiver promos to no avail. I sell a book or two every time I go to art market. I've got a few other strategies that come from selling art. But I'm not too concerned about sales of my first novel. I figure I need a few more titled under my belt before I can start to earn some $ from my writing hobby.
I look forward to contributing to the discussion on kboards and maybe getting a little feedback in the process.
Here's the cover. The image was designed by my artist friend Duane Knight. I'll also include some photos of my own paintings. I'm not a great artist, but I make a modest living with what I do.
Thanks all,
Dustin
