I'm looking to add links to my books, but I want to track them. I've never tried it before so I don't know where to turn.

If you know of a good (free) permanent link tracker service, please advise me.  :)

Check to see if Google Analytics will give you what you want.

From what I've read, it seems everyone 'round these parts is using bitly. I've never used it, so can't comment one way or another...
do I have to pay for a subscription to my link forever or will they do it for free?

The stats for my two smarturls are no longer showing up on My Current smartURLs page. One of my links stopped working on Google ads as well. Not sure if it's the smartURL website or something else. Anyone else having trouble? I've testing my links and they seem to be working but I'd appreciate it if you all would click them and tell me if you get anything and then I can see if the clicks show up on my stats page.

And here's the one that Google Ads rejected:

If you're comfortable working with MySQL/PHP, you can install your own URL shortener on your own website. (Register a new domain name if your current one is too long.)

http://yourls.org/

That way, as long as you maintain your website and domain name, your shortened URLs remain yours. No worries about a third party URL shortener going out of business or the country whose TLD is being used deciding the service doesn't comply with their laws. (See what happened to vb.ly.) You also don't need to worry about your links being reported as spam and being disabled by the third-party provider. (See the discussion on Google.)
