Are K1s Updating?

I was reading on K1 while listening to American Idol tonight and suddenly it would not "Next Page".  I figured it had frozen for some reason and was going to wait until commercial to do a hard reset.  While waiting, the "updating Kindle" box came up on the bottom left of the screen, then the page flashed and returned to my Home Page.  Whispernet was NOT on.  Everything is working as usual now without doing any reset.  The Version number remains the same - Kindle 1.2 (299870016) and I don't see anything different anywhere (except my Content Manager defaulting to Kindle-only books instead of my usual "all" sort - it usually does this after a reset and I have to wait for a WN connection before it shows all again).

Just wondering of any other K1 owners have noticed anything.  Of course there is no longer an "update" area, greyed out or otherwise in the settings menu (hasn't been since we got 1.2) so I didn't expect K1s to receive any other updates EVER - but it said it was on my screen!

That happens on mine fairly frequently. I just figured it was something internal.
Mine tells me on occasions that it is updating as well even though no version change or the wispernet is off. Like MonaSW, I'm assuming its just an internal thing it's doing.
Thanks for the replies.  I had never seen the message before except when we were all on update watch in Jan/Feb before release of the K2.  I had purchased half a dozen books the day before - maybe it does that when it gets around to indexing and I had just never seen it.

When was the last time a K1 had a firmware update? I'd say it's a safe bet that Amazon has pretty much abandoned the K1 with regards to updates.
I think right before the K2 came out. I agree with you that there will probably be no more updates to the original Kindles.
That was my impression too - no more updates for K1s, because there used to always be an "update Kindle" line in the settings menu that was greyed out if there was no update to download and turned black so you could click on it if there was.  After the Jan/Feb update when we got the sync feature and ability to delete books from inside the book, the update line was completely gone from settings.   Woe for our poor K1s :'(

I've got the update line. . . .it's grayed out but it's there.
I just asked my daughter who uses my old K1 and she said she hasn't gotten any updates

Ann - Where does the greyed out update line show up on your K1?

I also still have the "Update Your Kindle" line, grayed out on My KK. I clicked settings, then menu and there it is.

Another oddity. Last night and first thing this morning there was no greyed out update your kindle in my settings menu just

Checking again after your post and Ann's, the greyed out Update Your Kindle is back. It is not something I usually check but I was really looking for it after last night and it wasn't there. Maybe they are rolling out a K1 update and so it is back?

It is not a big deal, either updates will happen or they won't (how philosophical), but it seems like several people noticed something going on with K1s last night as there is a thread in Tips & Tricks questioning indexing last night and the other post in this forum about books disappearing.
FOLDERS!

HaHa, just kidding. ;)

From your lips (fingers) to God's (Bezos) ears!
I still have the "Update your Kindle" line (greyed out) on my KK and did not notice anything out of the ordinary last night.  My Whispernet was also off.
My K1 does the "updating Kindle" thing now and then. Very annoying when I'm in the middle of reading something, because when it updates, it usually loses any progress I've made in a book during that reading session.

I think (emphasis on "think") the Kindle refreshes after it completes an indexing session. The frequency it occurs would then be dependent on how often we add and remove content from our Kindles, and how much content we have stored on our Kindles.
Greg, That is exactly what happened to me last night and I think you must be right about the indexing process.  I had purchased maybe 6 books earlier in the day.  My Kindle has probably been doing this all along and I just have never "seen" it before as I usually hook up the charger, turn WN on and put Radar to sleep overnight when I have new purchases (I have weak WN coverage and only buy on-line and WN seems to pull a better signal for me when in sleep mode) and then new books are there in the a.m.  The part about indexing makes sense because WN was off.  I think a "real" update would require a WN or USB link with Amazon.  Thanks everybody for your input.
