Years ago, when I was just starting out, I stumbled on a site called Public Bookshelf. At the time I had a free story on my site and Public Bookshelf sent thousands of readers my way. When they liked what they saw, they went on to buy other books.

PublicBookshelf.com - No charge to authors. Just upload a free book with the cover art. Include a promo for more books and a link to your website at the end of your book. Of course, it helps if you give readers a reason to visit your site, such as a giveaway or a free short story to read.

If at some point you want to stop giving it away, just notify them and they will take the book down pronto.

Thank you for the reminder! I used to get a ton of hits from there on my site. They asked me to provide another book for their readers, and now that I have another book in that series free, I should do that.
