I ran across an article the other day that said self-published authors on ereaders should price their books at 2.99 or above because readers will view them as more valuable (and therefore, worth the money) than books priced at .99. I was just wondering what your thoughts were on this.

Hi,

I think this will always be a contentious issue and there will be a lot of opinions about it. I've heard some say that you should price it higher on .COM because US readers will assume it's rubbish if it's cheap. Similarly if you price it too high they won't but it in the first place.

I've had someone tell me to price my books as low as possible in the UK, because they love a bargain. (I know I do)

The short answer is - I don't know.

I wish I did and if anyone can give me some hard evidence about pricing I'll gladly listen!

I would not pay 2.99 or above for short stories, serials or anything like that.

I think it totally depends on the length of the ebook, the genre (erotica sells at at least 2 to 3 times for the same length as far as I've seen) and some other things.

And then you have moment of sales (like I'm doing with one of my books now) or other reasons to make the first book a lower price.

I really don't think you can make a blank statement like "Indies should price higher because it makes the books more valuable".
