Books bought with my k1 and copied to my computer will not work on my k3. I have to redownload them from Amazon. If my k1 and k3 are both authorized on my account, why do they do this. Is there anyway to overcome this without going through Amazon? I studiously backed up all my books on my computer (in case Amazon died), but I couldn't just copy them over, I had to redownload all of them. It seems like a big waste of time and effort.

This is how Amazon's version of DRM works.  It is to keep people from taking a book off of their Kindle and doing a USB transfer to another Kindle that is not attached to your account.  I do think it would have been better if Amazon made it where it was DRMed to your account instead of the device but this is what they think works best.

This is why I don't bother making backup copies of any of my Amazon books
