With all the discussions going on about SEO, keywords and metadata, I feel a bit lost in the dark.  Does anyone have any good reading material that might help me get up to speed on this subject?

I know very little about this, but after years of misinformation, was recently told by a web designer that now, the only two items that matter are for a web site are: the Title tag and the Description Tag. Title should be under 69 characters including spaces, and Description under 158 chars including spaces.

The keywords, he said, you might as well delete them: they have no impact.

Now, perhaps you're talking about something completely different.
