Borrows of books not in KU?

This confuses me; none of my books are in Select, but I sometimes get borrows. This must be a mistake.Do I get paid for this? And how on earth does this happen?

You shouldn't get any borrows. Free Matchbooks maybe if you ticked that box in CreateSpace.
Are your books lendable, Susanne? If the book is lendable, anyone who owns a copy can lend it once. I never thought about it, but perhaps an author gets paid if their book is loaned out?

EDIT: Just checked, and the book I checked was lendable.

When you publish a book with Amazon, on the last page (where you select the price), there is a little check box that is already filled out for you. (I think you only have the option to unselect if your price is $0.99.

That box is all the way under the price listings, just before the  Submit button.

That box says something about allowing lending of books through KOLL. Every once in a while I will see a borrow. I have no idea what they pay you, but you do get paid something. Since KU has been created, it's probably the same payout, but I don't know that for sure.
Have they ever been in Select?

No, that's not about the KOLL. See Betsy's comment further up.
There are 3 possible ways a book can be borrowed on Amazon, given that its offering those. I am not talking about local library lending.

The first is the original one. The book is lendable. A customer that purchases such book, can loan out the book to a friend with an email address and Amazon account for 14 days. Once. In those 14 days the book is not available to the owner. Once you loan a book out, you can never loan it again.
To see if a book is lendable, check in the book info where the size and publishers are listed. It will say lendable-yes

2nd option that came about is the KOLL. Or kindle owners lending library. One must have a prime membership and a kindle device to borrow such books. No kindle apps, just kindles. Fires and e-ink. A book is in the program if there is a prime logo next to the price. One must borrow from the kindle and there is a KOLL drop down on the kindles to find them. Its one book borrow per month in KOLL. Calender month.

3rd and latest is Kindle Unlimited. It will say Kindle unlimited on the book if they are in the program and customers pay $9.99 a month to read as many as they want with 10 out at a time.

There are book that are in KU but not in KOLL.

I wonder if those are trade-published books from certain publishers. On our end (as self-published authors) there isn't a way to separate the two. If you're in Select you're in both KU and KOLL.
Good explanation, Atunah!

And I've checked a bunch of Susanne's books....all of the ones I checked were lendable. I just never thought about whether the author was paid when I loaned a book. If they do, that's better than when I lend a friend a paper book, as we just did with Dead Wake by Eric Larssen.

(And again, for emphasis, the person-to-person lending option is available once per book. I can't lend the same book more than once.)

The ones I have seen are. I was looking for my monthly prime loan and I sometimes browse on my computer to find them and use the KU section. I got all exited when I saw all those historical romance and realized it was Kesington and they were only in KU, but not KOLL. I cancelled KU back in November for lack of content. I don't think those books were there at the time.

There are a couple of other medium sized publishers I saw in KU, but not in KOLL.

For a while it was a bit of a treasure hunt for those of us with no KU suscription but KOLL. For a while I didn't see the prime logo anymore. I used to be able to browse those on the computer and then get it on the kindle, but now that doesn't work anymore. Best way is for me to just mark down months in advance what my prime loan will be. Less pain in the butt. Its a bit easier to search on the fire, but I just don't like browsing for books on devices.

Good point, Yoda. If they were ever in Select, there may be hundreds downloaded from that time and readers are just now getting to the OPs book on their Kindle and passing the 10% mark. It's only then that the borrows will show up on the dashboard.
