Only on an ereader like the Kindle can someone jump to a website from inside the story. This opens up an incredible opportunity for Kindle to jumpstart the lagging economy through interactive tourism novels. Here's how it works: lots of Kindle authors write novels set in real tourism attractions across the country. A guide to the real locations in the fictional story would be offerd at the end of each novel. This tourism guide would allow Kindle readers to click on links to the real tourism websites and learn how to visit. If enough Kindle authors do this, it will create a new genre called Tourism Fiction. Tourism fiction will have a dramatic impact on the national economy because it will get more people traveling again. Books are better than commercials because readers spend a couple of hours focused on them, unlike a 30-second commercial.

But the word has to get out, so here is a link to the first interactive Kindle tourism novel, Blind Fate: http://southeasternliterarytourisminitiative.blogspot.com/2010/09/tourism-mystery-kindles-romance-in.html

While I wish you well with this, I gotta say, I've got a couple of reservations about this.
1) A kindle is not a great web browser, so hyperlinks at the end of a kindle book are not going to inspire me to browse.
2) Links for tourist attractions in a different city are not going to do much for me at home.
3) Links for a city I'm in may be helpful, but usually I've got stuff already planned out, so not so much.
4)  I've had travel books with links in them and as I said, not a great browser, so not a lot of fun.

It is certainly up to the author to write a story that makes the reader intensely curious about the real places. Unlike with a travel book, readers can connect with fictional characters on an emotional level through the drama of the story. Hopefully, that will be enough to encourage readers to click on the links (and possibly follow up on their computer if they like what they see but want to learn more). Plus, the browser will improve soon, as Nook is already in color. Since iPads support Kindle novels, there's a color browser opportunity there as well. I agree that the Kindle broswer is not the best, so it completely depends on how curious the reader is. There is a photo of what the Kindle browser looks like in the link I provided. Browsers can read the information and see the photos clearly.

Welcome to KindleBoards and congratulations on your book!

A brief recap of our rules follows:

--We invite you to use your book cover as your avatar and have links to your book and website in your signature. Instructions are posted here

--Please bookmark this thread (using your browser's bookmark/favorite function) so you can update it as we ask that authors have only one thread per book and add to it when there is more information. You may start a separate thread for each book (or you may have one thread per series of books, or one thread for all of your books, it's your choice).

--While you may respond to member posts to your thread at any time, you may only bump your thread (back-to-back posts by you) once every seven days. Once you've responded to a member, that resets the clock to zero and you must wait seven days to post, unless another member posts before then.

--We ask that Amazon reviews not be repeated here as they are easy to find at your book link. Also, full reviews from other sites should not be posted here, but you may post a short blurb and a link to the full review instead.

--Although self-promotion is limited to the Book Bazaar, our most successful authors have found the best way to promote their books is to be as active throughout KindleBoards as time allows. This is your target audience--book lovers with Kindles! Please note that putting link information in the body of your posts constitutes self promotion; please leave your links for your profile signature that will automatically appear on each post. For information on more ways to promote here on KindleBoards, be sure to check out this thread:
Authors: KindleBoards Tips & FAQ.

All this, and more, is included in our Forum Decorum: http://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,36.0.html. Be sure to check it from time to time for the current guidelines and rules.

Oh, and one more thing: be sure to check out the index threads at the top of the Book Bazaar. . . .there are details there about how you can be listed so that our readers can find you.

Thanks for being part of KindleBoards! Feel free to send us a PM if you have any questions.
