Compared to Wool...

It was "only" a 4-star review, but I can live with that. ;) No, the important part was this:

"Like 'Wool' this book develops characters that you'll want to hear more about. Buy it, read it, enjoy."

So now, everything anyone ever writes will be compared to Wool! No pressure or anything. Thanks a lot, Hugh!

Haha! That's pretty funny.
;D Hey, at least it was a good comparison.

I can just see someone leave this on mine: Compared to Wool, this novel sucked.

Vicki, you have just put a nightmare in my mind.  I fear I will see this one day:

"This book is no Wool. It isn't even Woolite.  You aren't Hugh Howey.  I know Hugh Howey.  You Madam, are NO Hugh Howey."  :(
You've got it easy. My book keeps getting compared to 50 Shades of Grey.

Hahahahaha! Loved the Woolite one. You crack me up Jeanne.

Hugh - Really? Ha! Probably because of all the sex in Wool...er, well, maybe not.
The only way i could ever see Wool and 50 Shades of Grey in the same sentence would be:

Unlike 50 Shades of Grey, Wool doesn't make we want to gouge my own eyes out and roast them on its burning pages.
I can see at least 50 shades of gray in this picture of wool!

See less See more

Okay, I'm not comparing it to Wool, and I know the neurotic introspection was kind of annoying, but I actually liked 50 Shades. Apples and oranges. Just sayin'...

Yeah, there is a lot of 50 Shades bashing, but let's not forget that the author started out as an indie author and I saw in an interview with her that the negative criticism from her peers hurt her feelings badly. She's actually a very nice lady. Writer's Cafe is a public board and anyone can google their names and find discussion about themselves here.

I think that Wool is compared to 50 Shades simply as a comparison of the upward trajectory of sales and notoriety, not the content. Unfortunately some bloggers/journalists fail to clarify this point, and I have seen comments at articles from readers that love erotica and can't wait to read Wool.

Fifty Shades of Woolly Gray?

Sounds a bit depressing, like soggy lint stuck in the dryer.
"Compared to 'Wool,' this book has a lot more sex."
"Compared to 'Wool,' this book is a lot more Victorian."
"Wait, I thought all self-published books were like 'Wool.' False advertising. One star."

Good for you for saying this.
Its my right as a reader to have an opinion through, it's not as if I read half of one book and made a snap judgement, I read all three in the hope it'd get better. It didn't. You can't please everybody, all of the time!

Haha - that's true...but also a few others as well. Great article in WSJ btw. It was very informative.
