Just finished watching Master Chef with Gordon Ramsey.  Don't get me wrong, I love Gordon.  The show was pretty good.  Contestants who are foodies and good cooks are competing for... something.  Gordon and 2 other judges offer honest criticism.  Profit.

But... they're making stuff like you'd expect in a 5-star french restaurant.  Which is great!

But you know what I'd really like to see?  A "home cooking" contest show.  Seriously.  Judging criteria:
* Prep time / effort to prepare.  Are you slaving away for 2 hours on just the dessert, or is it 20-minute prep time plus an hour in the oven?
* Nutritional value - Ramen noodles are easy to fix, and quick, and cheap, and pretty tasty, but just by themselves there's not a lot of nutrient there.
* Cost - 'cuz, 'um, yeah.  I buy salmon fillets and clams still in the shell EVERY week, and still keep my grocery bill reasonable  ::)
* Taste

Who's with me? ;D

I do enjoy watching Jamie Oliver's shows for exactly that reason, though (umm, the simple cooking, not the food fights). He typically cooks quite easy, fast dishes... and I often watch and think, "hey, that gives me an idea..." :)

Maybe Samurai Iron Chef, where each chef is also armed with a (blunted) sword that he can run over and smack his opponent with... *ponder*

;D It'd be more fun (for viewers) if the sword wasn't blunted... Heck, I hear cast-iron skillets make great weapons, so they probably don't even need a sword. :whistles innocently:

They make great weapons. Not that I'd know from personal experience or anything, though. Neither would hubby. *innocent whistle*

And they have to salvage and use the food tossed at them by the audience? Heck yeah!

Back to the topic at hand, though, I'd love to see a "home cooking" contest. Most home cooks know the basics, so they'd still be able to compete quite well when given most tasks. Obviously, asking them to do a souffle without showing them first would be cruel, but learnability (new word!) and ingenuity are important assets for a home cook to have.
