can anyone perhaps point an author in the right direction for the quickest and easiest way to format a manuscript already written in open office writer for amazon kindle online selling?

Go to www.smashwords.com and download their (free) formatting guide. It will walk you through it, keystroke by keystroke. Even a Luddite like me did it.
