Custom Logo wear?

Can't recall anyone talking about this before, but has anyone done giveaways with logo wear?

I just ordered 6 ballcaps with book series logo for $55 from Logoup.com. Thought I'd keep a couple and do an online giveaway. There's a promo code you use at check out SIX to get the $5.99 price each and if you order 6 or more they wave the "setup" fee of $50.

A neat, albeit expensive bit of promo.

That is actually a really good price for such low quantities! I think I just found a new source for convention swag.  :D
Hold the phone on this folks...My suspicions are aroused...

I submitted my artwork yesterday and today I get the following message:

"Our graphics team has reviewed your logo and has determined that it will exceed 12,000 stitches when transferred to embroidery. Rest assured, we can embroider your logo, but it is quite dense and has complex elements that will take our artists/production team double or triple the amount of time to setup and sew. In order to compensate for these extra resources, we charge a small fee of $3.99 per application of such logos. "

Why this bothers me is last summer I tried to get shirts made and uploaded a complex image. And got the same message. So this time, I designed something far more simple, and yet I get the same image. I am suspecting this is a form response to bilk money out of people taking the "sale".

Here are the two images I used:

then

I can see where the first one required more thread count. But the second?

Awaiting a response from these guys...

I'm the purchasing agent for a large east coast screen print and embroidery company. The price for those hats is suspiciously cheap. 6 decent quality hats at wholesale cost are almost $60. Then factoring in the embroidery cost--we charge by stitch count (how many actual stitches your logo would take to embroider)--would be maybe another $60 or so, estimated.

Just my opinion, but please proceed cautiously.

I used to run a sublimation imprinting business. As far as the blank hats go, I didn't find that price out of line with the stock I used to buy in bulk (and probably still have a few dozen in my basement :). They're pretty generic as far as caps go. Not super high quality, but not fall apart the second you wear them either.

Same here. Just checked prices from my suppliers and blanks currently range from $4-$8.
Well sure you can get a hat for a few bucks...I was just warning the OP to be cautious not to spend money on something that may be of poor quality in the end.
Thanks Allyson, I concur.

They told me $3.99 the first time, and when I asked them to clarify the 12000 stitches, they quoted me $4.99. I've cancelled my order and removed myself from their mailing list. I'm going to look around online and find the best price I can.

So far, California Print Company is quoting about $33 PER HAT for an order of 6. EGADS. The rate drops to $16 for PER HAT for 12.

Dang it. My kids really wanted some matching hats to wear.
After much searching, it turns out a low run of hats is expensive. Vistaprint was looking for almost $20.00 a hat.

I went ahead and took a gamble, and purchased 6 hats from Queensboro.com. Only $72 something after shipping, etc.

Supposed to be here first week in May. I'll update with some photos so you can see if these are any good.

While they may not be the best swag, I'm thinking of using them as a drawing kind of thing. Give one away per show, maybe through a mailing list, that kind of thing. For summer outdoor events, I'd think hats would be good, as I've had to buy hats for my kids at the zoo multiple times when they forgot theirs and whined until I caved in.
I have not done hats, but I have Society6 store where I sell mugs, t-shirts, tote bags etc. They don't have hats, so you might not be interested. But anyone can set up a store, upload designs, and then spread the word that fans can get stuff here. Alternatively, you can have giveaways and give this stuff away, buying one at a time and sending directly to winners. I also just purchased 50 hoodies for my street team from CustomInk and those were all custom digital printing. And I've purchase mugs - like 50 at a time - for giveaways. The Society6 store gives you a little discount, but it's a lot cheaper if you have the money up front to buy a small bulk order.

Even though Vistaprint is kinda pricey, I order tote bags from them when I buy in bulk. I really like those small canvas totes and you can upload a photo (digital art) and it comes out very nice. Ditto for their pens. I just ordered 250 pens and yeah, they are quite pricey, but anyone who is picky about a pen will keep this one around. I use mine all the time because it is high quality.

I've also ordered buttons from Rockbuttons.com - highly recommend those guys. Super cool. And I use Blue Bee Printing for die-cut stickers and magnets. Sometimes the cheapest way is not the best. Your fans will appreciate a quality item and it will hang around a lot longer than some cheap throwaway pen or magnet that can barely hold itself up, let along a single sheet of paper.

Hope your hats turn out great! :) Fans love this stuff. Like go nuts over it.

I have used Queensboro in the past and have been quite satisfied. I hope that they are still good for you.

Queensboro is fantastic! Not only do they ship faster than they say, not only do they only require a run of four items, but they have fantastic customer service... I got six hats from them and wasn't satisfied with the size. I didn't say anything until I got a customer service survey. I gave them four stars instead of five, and noted I had wished the hats were a bit bigger. Surprisingly, I got an email from them, and they are sending me two more hats, free, in a larger size.

They now have all my business, and if you need any promo items I highly recommend them.
I've been thinking about getting my husband a black polo shirt (the kind he prefers) and having the Wyrmtales Press logo embroidered on it, with the word "Minion" under the logo, since that's how he refers to himself when we're at festivals. We have an embroidery place near us that isn't terribly expensive.
