Since my blog is a writer advocate site, mixed with industry watchdog, I only advertise my book/s very rarely. That's due to the theme and topic issues. I might announce a sale or a new release on a singular book, or I might even list my current series in a future post. But my blog isn't designed to attract readers, and this is where I might be going wrong in not high-lighting my stuff. You've actually given me the idea to do it, since I think it might break up the monotony of pure text lectures.

I have a blog and promote my books on it.
Since I make sales without any advertising, I can only conclude that it produces sales.
It has some writing articles on it, but I try to make it an 'entertainment hub' which features flash fiction, humour, etc.
It's a Wordpress blog and up until recently my books under this name were on the sidebar.
But I now have a new system.
Two of my books are in sticky posts, which means they only appear on the first page.
Others are on a page called 'Bookshelf.'
Pages can be accessed anytime, as opposed to sticky posts.
I avoid the 'hard sell,' 'buy now' attitude.
I will be doing some advertising at some point, though.
It seems to be quite a science, from what I can gather, a serious interruption to my writing time.

I don't promote books on my blog, although I do refer on it from time to time that I am a writer.

I have seen blogs where books were promoted and I would guess that a blog is a good way to promote books, but the blogs I've seen that appeared most effective in this were non-fiction related blogs.

Can't really answer your question from personal experience, though. I think that if your blog doesn't take too much time away from your fiction (or non-fiction) writing, it's undoubtedly a valuable marketing tool.... Just one of several available to writers.

One guy here on KB (if memory serves) not only has a blog, but uses YT to promote his book materials, which are related to his blog and YT content. So it probably can be done.
