I was going to post my book on a a thread that fit my book (one of those share your cheap book ones) but while I was skimming through the last 5 or so pages of posts, I couldn't help but notice it was just authors flogging their work. No discussion, no 'hey, i'm going to check that out!', no nothing besides self-promotion. Some books seemed interesting, but I did not buy any. I was going to do the same, but it kind of felt like trying to scream in a room where everyone else was screaming.

So in your opinion does advertising/making posts about your work in places like this actually help your visibility or is it just a bunch of loud noise? I'd love to hear some seasoned opinions on the matter.

This one is for writers and generally not used for self-promotion although you can put your titles in your signature.  I'm not sure why you think everyone is flogging their work here. Many of us are familiar with each others' work and don't need flogging (well some folks do).

You want the Book Bazaar, where you are allowed to maintain one thread for your book which you can update now and again. READERS frequent there.

The Writers' Cafe isn't where we come to promote. My market is 12 - 16 year old girls. Not many come here.

So while I have a post in the Book Bazaar, and I do buy ads for the site, it's more because I like coming here and talking to authors that are self publishing, too. Only at Kboards can I be sure others know what I'm going through.

Welcome to KBoards, imaginer.

I think you may be referring to the "Bargain Books-List all books under 3 bucks here" thread, but I'm not sure. You're right; there's generally no "interaction" in that thread...just book posts. I can't say whether any sales result from such listings.

You can start a dedicated thread about your book in the Book Bazaar and update it no more often than once every seven days. Here are the rules regarding that: http://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,15146.msg1577083.html#.UUkJS9nrh2Q.

If you have a free book, there's a thread for that too: http://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,97167.0.html#.UUkJrtnrh2Q.

Other than those threads, self-promotion is not allowed elsewhere at KBoards. You are welcome to add your book to your signature, however, which is done through Profile>Forum Profile Information>Signature (scroll to bottom of page).

I hope you enjoy the forum. :)

Dreamweaver has it right. The main thing to remember is that there are a BUNCH of boards here on KBoards.  :)

The threads in the Book Bazaar section are generally ONLY for promoting your books (or blogs or websites).  There isn't much discussion in the threads but I know that many members browse there regularly looking for new reads.

Here in the Writer's Cafe, there is a lot of discussion -- generally centered around the profession. It really isn't appropriate to 'flog' ::) your book here -- though, in discussion, sometimes it helps to refer to it.

In the other boards there is a lot of discussion as well -- the only thing to keep in mind is that the rest of the board is NOT a place to promote -- so no links in the post or commenting about your own work.  However, with that restriction, you're welcome and encouraged to take part in any discussion, and, if you've set up your signature to have links to your books, people with whom you interact may become aware that you write and may check them out.
