Is there a way to find out the total pages in a Kindle book? And to see page numbers on screen?

Amazon added page numbers in the last firmware update. They're only for the Kindle 3 (so if you're using a Kindle 2 like me, you won't see them). But as I understand it, you press the menu button, and then the page numbers should be visible.

Anybody with a Kindle 3 want to confirm with your experiences?

confirmed, though not all books have them.

You can find the total pages on the amazon website of the book too.

Really? There's no way to find out how many pages in the entire book unless you check Amazon or a hard copy?

As a new Kindle owner, it's a bit disorienting to not have any idea where you are in the book while reading (how close to the end? You only know if you know how many pages) Of course some books have TOCs, but still.......

There's no way to find out how many pages in the entire book unless you check Amazon or a hard copy?

You can see the total number of pages (as well as the page number that you're currently on) when you press the Menu button. (At least, according to this web article, which has a screenshot of page numbers on the Kindle.)

Why do you need page numbers that badly if you can see how far you are along by the % it gives?
Otherwise there are locations (when you open the menu) which will give you a better estimate of how far you are along in the book.

Which I already confirmed and no, it does not work for all books.

Ahhhhh!! Is that what that is along the very bottom of the Kindle screen? I thought it was battery power used!

Well, that info is really helpful, thank you!

Battery power is the little gray bar in the upper right corner. You can access it when you are in a book by clicking "menu" or it shows when you are on the home screen.

You might want to browse thru the User Guide. It explains all the displays and button functions.

I have, that one just didnt register with me. It's very similar to the battery usage display in other devices.

And as a technical writer by trade, I can tell you that no one reads the user guides!

(When I read the Kindle one, I mostly critiqued it, lol)

Some do. I even sit down and read through the owner's manual for cars before I buy them.

But that's just me.

I admit I don't always read Users guides.

But if I need to know something, it's always the first place I look!

I actually think the Kindle UG is pretty easy to navigate and well written.

I'm happy with the bar at the bottom that tells me how far I've read and how far I have yet to go, in a general, analog sort of way like seeing, in a print book, that I'm "about 1/3 of the way through" or whatever.

Ideally I'd like both a page number and a percentage bar but so far the books on my Kindle don't seem to be showing the page numbers.

not even when you push the menu button (like where the locations are)?
Cause a lot of (free) indies I read actually have page numbers... are indies coming along more with it than publishers?

I used to miss having page numbers, but I've got used to the percentages now.

Even with the Kindle firmware upgrade, I've only encountered one book so far out of the hundred or so I've purchased that exhibits page numbers.

For some books I do miss them... I use goodreads to keep track of my reading, and when I'm reading a 1000 page book and a 400 page book side by side the 1000 page books seems to go so slow

Since I only use percentages to keep track of where I am

For the Kindle to show page numbers there has to be an associated paper edition. You can see whether there is one by checking the 'product details' section on the books page. If there is no paper edition, there won't be page numbers -- and there are a lot of independent authors who publish only in "e". It's been my experience that most trade published books do have a paper edition associated. And there are a good number of independently published titles that have a paper edition available as well.

Note, that if you haven't connected the Kindle via wireless since this change came in, you won't see it on books already on your Kindle because they won't know about the association.

And, it is also worth noting that it's only for books sold by Amazon -- books acquired from other sellers will not have an associated paper edition for purposes of page numbers.

This is not true, most of my smashword ebooks have page numbers... They have no dtb to compare pages with but still have page numbers from how they would be if they did have a dtb version.

I have a lot more amazon ebooks that have no page numbers than books from other sources. And those without page numbers are more likely to be traditionally published works then selfpublished works.
