Have seen some apps that allow you to watch TV shows. Does the Fire play these??
I'm not very tech savvy so thought I'd ask before I tried it and then spent a couple of hours learning that it can't be done...

Do you mean like Hulu Plus?  If the app is available in the Amazon Appstore, the Fire will likely run it (the product page will tell you.)  Sideloaded apps may or may not run.

My experience with most of the apps that are supposed to allow you to watch TV shows, other than Hulu Plus, is that they promise much and deliver little.

Do you have a specific app you're asking about?

You can also go to the networks and they often have complete episodes of the more popular shows.  Usually 1 day behind.  I think Fox is a week behind but it is there.  iThingies have an app for that but I don't think it's absolutely necessary, just go to nbc.com, abc, etc. and see what's available.
