following on Amazon?

1205 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Kia Zi Shiru
Is something going around or something? I've suddenly got multiple emails each day that people are following me on the Amazon Kindle website. https://kindle.amazon.com/

I'm not sure why I suddenly start getting them and they are people I don't know at all.

How do you do that? I can think of several of my favorite authors I'd love to get an email telling me about new releases etc- without me signing up for a mailing list. Is it a function at author central?

Me, too. How do you do it?

I just poked around on the site and couldn't figure out how to follow SM Reine or Elle Casey. I don't have any followers myself. Not quite getting how the following thing works on there ...
An author named Werner Vogels is advertised on the front page as "highly followed," and if you search on that name, one "people" result comes up -- him. If you search on my name or SM's or Elle's, no "people" results come up. It seems as though some authors are searchable on that site and some aren't. Maybe it's a function they're enabling gradually, or maybe there's something you have to do to get yourself set up as a followable author.
Well, I just searched for Hugh Howey on there, and he came up but I couldn't follow him, so who know's how that works?

Edit: Nevermind, I see his books, and someone named Hugh C. Howey that isn't our Hugh, and I can follow that other Hugh if I want to.
I think maybe your profile gets created the first time you sign into the account. I've gone to that site to read the public comments on my book, but I'd never actually signed into it as a Kindle owner. I did just now and was able to update a preferences/profile page, which then fed through to my Amazon reviewer profile page. I don't know if doing that has now made me followable, though.

Hm ... it's all sort of mystifying.

Actually, I just searched for Hugh and found his profile and was able to follow him. Daniel, were you signed in when you searched and weren't able to follow?
After looking around some more it looks like you can't follow author profiles on the site, but the profiles of other readers. In other words, if you find a book the author's name will not be clickable.

If you do a search and the author shows up under "People" you can follow the link and then you will see a follow button. But not all authors will come up in a search, so question is how to get the author to show up in the search.

I don't get how several things work on this site. I had no idea this feature existed so was excited to see this thread. I was wishing for a place to see and manage all my kindle books easily with cover images (the manage your kindle library is horrible) but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use it. I don't see any help or faq link. It doesn't really seem to be as useful as I had hoped. Heavy sighs.

What is the difference between Kindle Only and All books? When I choose All Books it doubles the book count and pulls up a bunch of books from somewhere that I don't even have on my kindle, though I may have a print copy (but not from Amazon).
I found the FAQ. It is in the drop down under your user name at the top of the screen.

This seems to be right. When I searched for myself I found my page, but it's my personal profile (which is empty atm) and not my author profile.

Edited to fix some wrong assumptions I'd made originally.
So I clicked on the link. It took me to the site. I didn't login, so I'm listed as guest. I searched my name. My books pop up. Under that is one people result for my name. I click on that, it pulls up a profile. It's empty of course I've never gone here before today. Under my name is a button that says follow. I click on button. It brings me to the login page for amazon. I stop. I write this post.
It seems like this is only for readers following other readers, not readers following other authors.
I think this is AMZ's extension of Goodreads... looks like my bookshelf from there, since not all of my kindle purchases are showing up. I wonder if it will be a worthwhile endeavor for authors, or another time suck. Hmmm...  ???

Yeah, when I first logged in, my list of Kindle books included a bunch with titles in an Asian language that I've certainly never bought. I deleted them from the list, but I can't imagine how they got there to begin with.

It does look like Am is thinking in terms of a Goodreads kind of thing, but it must be in early stages.

It might be in the early stages but this website has been there for years already. I remember it was there when I bought my K3 2 years ago.

One of the things it does it that it shows the highlighted passages from other readers on the book, but that is the only thing I know about it.
