I've been wondering lately how this is handled. I know I experimented with it for about five minutes with a research paper I had written. Didn't work, I gave up. I suppose I'll change them all to end notes to get around that.
But for someone like Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams, the footnotes are sort of essential where they appear. End notes certainly wouldn't do.
I don't use footnotes in my fiction. I'm accused of ripping off Douglas Adams enough already. I could see working footnotes into the main text, but that of course changes the feel immensely, which is probably why footnotes were invented in the first place.
Does anyone have any experience or interest in this?
