I've been wondering lately how this is handled. I know I experimented with it for about five minutes with a research paper I had written. Didn't work, I gave up. I suppose I'll change them all to end notes to get around that.

But for someone like Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams, the footnotes are sort of essential where they appear. End notes certainly wouldn't do.

I don't use footnotes in my fiction. I'm accused of ripping off Douglas Adams enough already. I could see working footnotes into the main text, but that of course changes the feel immensely, which is probably why footnotes were invented in the first place.

Does anyone have any experience or interest in this?

I did use endnotes in my fiction, as I have some French words and phrases to give it a French flavor.  I just changed and got rid of the endnotes because in the samples the number next to each word that has an endnote is so big it makes it look like every once in awhile I double-spaced and that I didn't format right. It didn't look bad on the actuals kindles, but I didn't want people reading the samples to think the book was a mess.

Anyway, IF you want endnotes and are using Word, just convert footnotes to endnotes. It does work well, as the people can simply click on them, go to the endnote and click right back again.

Now that I got rid of the endnotes I simply have the words and phrases in italics and right at the beginning of my book, on the starting page at the top I have a link to the glossary. It says "NOTE: Glossary for all italicized words". They can either look through it right away or go to "beginning" and click on it to read.

The sample now looks appealing.

This isn't a perfect set-up, but I have had no complaints. I didn't have complaints the other way, either, but felt some people might pass up buying the book with it looking funky.

Of course, for the paperback I have footnotes.

Depending on your requirements, you might be able to just fake it with bbcode1. It's what I do all the time2.

1. like (X)HTML, only more limited - and annoying
2. i.e. about once a year
That was slick George, ya got me. ;D

But I sent Harvey a link for a 'smf mod' that does it real slickly without using the {sup} and {hr} code.

You can't do footnotes - they automatically get changed to endnotes but they give you the link to go directly back to where you were. My husband writes with tons of footnotes and we just had to settle for endnotes as an e-book but I think it turned out ok.
