The only public place I ever work isat the hair dresser's. The wife and I always go together. I'm usually finished in ten minutes, then I have two hours to work while the wife gets hers done. The background noise and chatter is actually quite conducive to work.

Great story. I've never heard anything remotely this interesting in a coffee shop. I think I need to look for a new place to get my java.

I've done it on occasion, and it's a nice change of scenery.  So long as I don't run into anybody I know, I can get work done.

I have done a fair amount of writing sitting outside my children's Catholic School waiting for pick up (we have an hour wait every day in the car line, don't ask)...

Good thing no one there knows what I'm writing about!

I always write in a coffee shop; I actually find the distractions less distracting than being at home where there are so many other things begging for my attention. I've overheard some interesting conversations, but nothing quite like that one.

I love writing at Panera Bread with a friend and B&N when I'm alone. I love people-watching and eavesdropping...er, I mean character studies. Yep, that's what I meant. Teenagers are the best. If they think you aren't listening they will say anything.

The only way I could ever write in a coffee shop is if I'm the only one in it.  I live in Japan and in the Starbucks by the station I always see the same foreigners, sitting on their own, gleefully tapping away on their laptops.  I don't know how they do it.  I've tried, but I can't even read a book because I'm constantly people-watching.  I love the whole Bohemian styling of it all, but for me personally the best way to write is to be on my own in a cabin in the middle of a forest.

Saying that, it's a great place to find characters.  You can just sit there with a notebook and write down all the oddballs!

That's a great story, by the way.  I actually know a guy out here who got into one of those situations a few years back.  The husband filmed him, but otherwise didn't "participate".  For all I know he was recruited in the Starbucks, I don't know ...

That's quite an interesting study. A little ambient noise goes a long way

Panera is my favorite place to write, but it's a lot cheaper to write at the library. However, on occasion, I need a blueberry scone or a spinach/artichoke souffle and a cup of coffee for inspiration. In fact, I feel a bit of inspiration coming on for tomorrow morning if I can get there early enough to snag a souffle. They run out so fast.
