There's been a lot of discussion about various pricing models in particular when creating a series offer the first book in the series for .99 and subsequent books for $2.99 or something close to it.

Are you more focused on increasing your fortune or your fame as a author/publisher? Where do you balance between wanting reader/peer acceptance and wanting to make a great living as a author/publisher?

Fortune.  I'm in it for the money.

And the fun, too, of course.  But seriously, this is a business.  It's about revenue and profit.

That said, fortune can't come without acceptance from readers, at least.  So there has to be a mix.  But if given a choice between setting price higher and getting fewer readers for higher profit or setting price lower and getting more readers for less, I'll take the former.

Practically speaking, though, I'm in Victoria's camp right now.  Gotta finish a lot more tales and get them out there.  I'm on a six year plan, so we'll see how it goes.

Good question.  First and foremost, I just LOVE writing.  I can't get enough of it.  So I just want to write, and if I can make a profit doing it, even better.

As it was said above, this is a business.  With another pen name, in a different genre, I sold 15 stories at $0.99 in June, then changed the price to $2.99 starting in July.  I only sold sold 3 stories at $2.99 so far this month, but made more money.

It's the same story under this pen name (lower sales, since I just started in early July).  I started out at $0.99, but changed to $3.99 after 5 sales, and got another 2 sales at the higher price point.  Better profit, less readers.  I want both high readership and good profits.  I'm trying to find the happy medium.  It's tough, since I'm pulled both ways.  But times are tough, and I'm living hand to mouth right now.  I need the money more.  Maybe it'll change later, but right now I need to maximize profit.

I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't actually want to be Hollywood celebrity style famous--not that paparazzi would find me attractive enough to stalk, even if I do manage to become well known. On the other hand I do very much like the idea of going out and having large numbers of people read and enjoying my book. Money would be nice as well, but I'd like to think that if the Devil came forward and offered a large lump sum to give up all my creative endeavors and delete every copy of my book I'd say 'no dice'.

So, I suppose fame, but a particular type of fame. Certainly if I had to choose between selling 100 copies of a book for $1 each, and 1 copy for $100, I'd pick the first option, and not just because of the greater exposure.

As someone mentioned above I'm not in it for the fame... I'm just happy to be making a decent living doing something I love. Not many people get that opportunity. I also price my first books at .99 and subsequent books at 2.99 and 3.99. For me it's all about building a readership as well as pulling in decent profit. I had a few books written before I even published and that certainly helped. More books = a growing readership AND profit.
