Paper Phoenix: A Mystery of San Francisco in the '70s (A Classic Cozy--with Romance!), by Michaela Thompson. (Still free?)

Free, today only!

"I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery novel. Micaela Thompson knows how to make you feel like you were there. You get the San Francisco flavor with her descriptions of the different areas of the city through a wonderfully-written story. I like a mystery story where I can begin to try and figure out who did it but am still a little surprised at the end but do not feel as if I was misled. She also creates believable heroines. Maggie has to come to grips with her life changes. She is not a cardboard character and so you empathize with her as she works through the mystery. This is the second Thompson mystery I have read and I am so glad that her stories are becoming available again!" -- Amazon reviewer

"Wickedly delicious... What makes (Thompson's) book so particularly wonderful is the way it accomplishes the detective novel's covert mission of urban analysis and social criticism." -San Francisco Examiner

"(Thompson) knows how to create that sense of place which is so important to any novel, but particularly to crime fiction; her characters are believable men and women in a real world..." -P.D. James

First comes divorce, then comes murder…

…or at least sweet thoughts of murder. Maggie Longstreet has plenty of them after slimy, ambitious Richard trades her in for a more recent model. She's so depressed she can barely get out of bed when Larry Hawkins, a seemingly not-at-all depressed acquaintance, commits suicide out of the blue. Suddenly Maggie goes on high alert, remembering something her evil ex said about Larry-something highly suspicious.

And from there, it's just a short segué to a bracing new development:

"When some women get divorced they go back to school, I thought. Some do volunteer work at the hospital, or join communes and learn to birth calves. Some have affairs with inappropriate men. My new interest is burglary. Maggie Longstreet, former wife and mother, past president of the Museum Guild, now starting a career as a second-story woman."

Fortunately, Maggie isn't alone in her adventure-a very attractive, much younger man proves a lot more fun than Richard ever was. In fact, the real delight of this witty, sly mystery is seeing Maggie come alive again after a suffocating marriage. Set in the'70s, it has a bit of that Mad Men feel of women on the brink of something big. And completely unexpected.

You know Maggie's going to be okay when she says: "I'd rather have had one of those cute little guns with a mother-of-pearl handle, but this (diamond pin) would have to do. I concealed it in my hand. At least now I was armed-or pinned."

The Moonglow Cafe: A Paige MacKenzie Mystery, by Deborah Garner. (Still free?)

"This second book in the Paige MacKenzie series did not disappoint. An engaging mystery, interestingly quirky surroundings and characters -- yet it all seems believable. And written without jarring, crude language and explicit sex. A fun read. I look forward to reading more of Paige MacKenzie's adventures." -- Amazon reviewer

New York reporter Paige MacKenzie has a hidden motive when she heads to the small town of Timberton, Montana. Assigned to research the area's unique Yogo sapphires for the Manhattan Post, she hopes to reconnect romantically with handsome cowboy Jake Norris. Each of the town's residents holds a key to untangling more than one long-buried secret, from the hippie chick owner of a new age café to the mute homeless man in the town park. As the worlds of western art and sapphire mining collide, Paige finds herself juggling research, romance and danger. Anyone but Alex (The English Brothers Book 3), by Katy Regnery. (Still 0.99?)

"I love stories about how someone can make you want to become a better person, how someone can see something in you and believe in you when others can't. Anyone but Alex is such a story. I totally loved reading about "the elusive heart of Alex English being sideswiped by a kid." -- Winnie, Goodreads reviewer

"The interaction of the five brothers and all the other characters is amazing and that's what makes this series so special and unique. The books are perfectly combined and it seems like one real, authentic and vivid story." -- Simona, Sky's Book Review

Anyone but Alex is the third of six books about the Philadelphia-based, wildly-handsome English brothers who are all on the look-out for love.

(Sort of. Barrett and Fitz are officially off the market, Alex has sampled every piece of available ass from Rittenhouse Square to the Liberty Bell, Stratton can't seem to see what's right in front of him, and don't even get me started on super hottie, Weston...)

Alex English, the well-known man whore of the country club set, has always preferred to play the field, eschewing a chance with Miss Right for a satisfying quickie with Miss Right-Now. But after seeing his two older brothers take the plunge, something has been aching inside of Alex, and no amount of casual sex seems to fill the void in his heart.

Jessica Winslow, whose older brothers are best friends with the English brothers, has returned home from a fifteen-year stay in England, only to find herself face-to-face with her childhood crush, Alex English, on her first night home. She's heard all the rumors, but Jessie remembers the older boy who was so kind to her as a child, and can't help reaching out to Alex in friendship.

Between disapproving brothers, scheming exes, and the biggest business deal of English & Sons' illustrious history, Alex and Jessie's budding romance is going to be put to the test. The question is...will it be strong enough to be their happily-ever-after?

*All books in The English Brothers series are approximately 200 pages. The RWA classifies this as "Mid-length Contemporary Romance."
