I just searched the King County Library web site and found they have over 500 E-books available to download of their web site. I imagine their are many other libraries offering E-books.

here found the conditions:
You may have a maximum of 35 titles checked out from the Digital Library.
Downloaded titles are checked out for 21 days and are automatically returned to the library.

That's pretty good...our limit is 12 items.

yep. My library offers Mobipocket reader file (.mobi) downloads, but I think you only can have it for specific number of days.
Are you able to read these on the Kindle?

I'm wagering that the files have DRM on them that will keep them from opening on the Kindle.
