Canada has several writing grants as well, plus individual provinces plus cities on top of that. I know people who received $35k to write for a year.

So how long do you have to have been in Wales to get this grant? I've been contemplating moving to Wales, Scotland, Ireland, or Chile for some time now. Some extra cash might entice me to choose for Wales. Not that I think the money is free, someone coughed it up, though I've been taxed enough in my life to not feel bad taking some tax money back, even if it's not from the government that initially took my money.

I think you have to have a trad publisher to get a grant, but it's true there are programs for writers

Those grants have been available here for years. I looked into applying for one, oh, at least ten years ago. Didn't bother in the end, though can't recall why. Maybe because my work isn't sufficiently highbrow. No idea what the current criteria are.

If you get the grant (as a Canadian), chances are you'll have an easier time getting a publisher for the book
