Karen is taking a website design class and I need to find a way to put her site on-line.  I googled free hosting and came up with a bunch of sites, but I don't know which ones are legit.  Any suggestions?

Hmmm, the only totally free places I can think of are Weebly and Wix and both of them have the /weebly.com or /wix.com at the end of the url. If you're ok with that, you might check them out. Maybe someone else will chime in with better suggestions.

Do you need your own domain name?

If not ... Do you know anyone who already has a website? If so, and if you just need a host short-term for a project, then that person might be willing to let you upload your files to a subfolder on their site. So to get to your files, it would look like www.friendsite.com/yoursubfolder/samplepage.htm. As long as you don't actually link that subfolder to any pages on your friend's site, your files will stay "hidden" and won't show up on any search engines.

If you need your own domain name ... I don't know any free ones offhand. But you could find a short-term cheap solution. For example, 1and1.com offers a 3-month package at 6.99 per month, so 21.00 total. I think it a domain name comes included in the price. Other hosts probably have similar prices/plans. Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone.  She needs to do a bit more work on the site before it will be ready to put up but I'll start looking at the options you suggested so I'm ready when she is.

There are number of paid host servers. If you're using your own domain, not sure what is out there besides paid servers. I use Successful Hosting dot com. You may find host servers that are less expensive.

https://www.successfulhosting.com/

Have used them for years. I use free software to build it. Success Hosting has a nice control board to upload with.

http://www.seamonkey-project.org/

Built three sites:

http://www.ralphcotton.com/ http://casperparks.com/ and http://stellardestiny.com/

The Ralph Cotton one is currently under a revamp, his webmaster for 14 years. Giving the site a cleaner look. A site the size of his, takes time. He has nearly 55 books out.

Keep it simple, use links to online book stores. Watchout when using box email forms and posting email address. There are robots out there surfing the net for links like email address. Hence, casper at casperparks dot com. Not, think those weird letter and number boxes used at many sites cost money. Something, I am considering looking into.

If you want it to be free, you're almost certainly not going to be able to get your own full, custom domain name. But even with free sites you can get a semi-custom domain name. davidhburton mentioned Wordpress, and I'm going to recommend Blogger. For each you'll have either "wordpress" or "blogspot" thrown in with whatever personal domain name you choose, but both are respectable sites and often the host's tag goes overlooked.

I use Blogger/Blogspot and it's really easy to work with. "http://tjvwriter.blogspot.com/" <-- see, not so bad looking? I got to come up with half of the address!

I'm a raw amateur at HTML so I just use the easy-edit functions with Blogger, but it does give you the option to customise HTML. I haven't even tried it because I'm a newb, so I don't know how well that works but... HTML editing is HTML editing, innit?
