GIMP -- FREE equivalent to photoshop

Hi all,

I'm just giving a shout out about GIMP. I know people often ask about what people use to make their cover art and I know that for most of us, money is tight. Well, there's a free design application called GIMP. It's a very powerful piece of software and it has a definite learning curve, but it's also powerful enough to be used at the professional level by artists. Just google it to find a version that fits your computer. And, there are a lot of free tutorials out there. It can be challenging to learn but I feel it's worth the effort. Here's a link of someone making a book cover using GIMP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbRxzQdwfHU

I love GIMP.  It took time to learn how to work with it, but it is the best program I've worked with when creating book covers.  :)
Same here, all my book covers are made with Gimp.
I'm a big GIMP fan -- all the covers except for the first one, Bound in Amber, were made with GIMP.

I'm using Photoshop now, but when I was just starting out, I didn't want to put a lot of money (any money, actually) into something, and my son told me about the Gimp. Once I got the hang of it, it was pretty easy to use.

I've got some links to tutorials on my blog's resource page, if anyone is interested in learning more about the program. For some reason, I don't have this video linked, though I've watched it, so thanks for reminding me about it!

I love GIMP to, I just wish I knew how to use it. I know that I'm only using a fraction of what it's capable of.
I love using GIMP. I'm not a trained designer or anything, but I used to lay out ads for some of my clients when I sold ad space in smaller magazines, and GIMP's got most of the same features as top of the range commercial software.

To demonstrate the extent to which I'm not a trained designer, I also knocked up the cover to Something Nice in GIMP. Took me about ten minutes, once I'd decided on a concept.
