Got my Paperwhite and it is perfect!

Well I have been using my Kindle Keyboard for a few years now and it has been a faithful companion. I had been wanting to upgrade to the paperwhite  but was really reluctant as I've been reading that lots of people have been having issues with screen quality and then also with sideloading books they were having issues with the Pdoc tags and no covers. I use Calibre extensively and purchase books from all different stores so have lots of books to sideload. I was excited about covers showing up so wanted to make sure they would look good.
Anyways, I got my paperwhite and amazon slim case and I have to admit my fears were unnecessary. The screen looks great. There is some slight shadows at the bottom between the lights, but nothing intrusive and it doesn't reach the text. There are no color blobs or uneveness that I can tell, or my husband can tell. I side loaded about 40 books out of calibre on to the paperwhite and all covers show up perfect. I read for a couple hours yesterday, and then read some more in the evening relying more on the light. I have to say no complaint:) I wasn't sure I'd like the touch screen as I liked the buttons on my KK but I have an Ipad so am used to a touch interface, and am pleasantly surprised that the paperwhite screen dosen't attract fingerprints like the Ipad.
I got the amazon case in fuschia and really like it. It is way smaller than my old medge case for my KK which also held my  illuminator light. I like how opening it turns the kindle on. Still debating whether to remove the ads, to make it even more streamline. Overall great product and my new favorite toy!

I got my first PW on Day One, and a second for my wife a week ago. Both are perfect, just a bit of shadow between the lights.

My wife originally wasn't sure she wanted one - she loved her K2 and didn't want to give it up (mostly due to the really nice Oberon cover).

After the first 5 minutes with the PW she brought her K2 and Oberon to me and said "Sell them!"

Congratulations on getting a good one on the first go. My first one had some faint discoloration, which was really distracting for me. Luckily the replacement I received was perfect and I'm very happy with it.  :)
I just ordered a PW today. Now I'm a little concerned when this thread for a perfect PW has a couple of replies and the thread for defective ones has over 430. Yikes.

That was my exact fear. Seeing all the defective paperwhite threads and the issues with calibre and such. I feel that there are alot of people in the world, and that a lot of people probably got a paperwhite. Now if someone gets a good non defective device, they are less likely to write a good review, but if you get a bad device, you are more likely to write a bad review. So overall, I think that there are still a lot of good paperwhites out there, but they aren't being written about because people are happy reading on them :). This isn't to make light of those that have gotten bad devices, because I really do believe that there is a quality issue out there, especially the early ones.
Bear in mind that people who are dissatisfied are usually much more vocal than people who are satisfied. And that there are a lot of posts in the Defective PW thread where people say they are happy with their PW.  :)  Let us know, LDB, when you get it!

OK, let me add to the perfect column.
My wife and I bought each other PW's for Christmas. They are replacing our Kindle mini NT's. A vast improvement in reading comfort.
So, make that two more votes for the Paperwhite. :D
Grats on your new Paperwhite!  :)  Have another Paperwhite arriving for my wife Wednesday.  I think she is excited about it  ;D
I am saving for a paperwhite at the moment. Got a beaten up Keyboard at the moment, and would love an upgrade. Bit concerned now about the issues I've read, but as you have said, negative comments are placed faster than positive ones. I still think I will give it a go.
The PW I got for Christmas is working really well. It's my first Kindle and I love it.  Much more practical to read on than my iPod or my Galaxy Tab2.

Cheers Larry.

Mainly, people who have issues come and post to say what they've noticed and ask if anyone else has.

People who don't see any problems, are just busy using them! :D

And, if you read through whole threads -- even the really long ones -- you'll see that even when there are a bunch who have a similar problem, there are usually more who bother to post that it's not something they've had trouble with.

It's also true that some people are more sensitive to things than others. I think my PW is fantastic, and I've seen one or two others. As far as I'm concerned, they've all been pretty much the same. Certainly all easily called "working as designed". But I've no doubt at all that there are some here who would look at them and see something I don't. And if it's a real annoyance to them, the fact that it doesn't bother ME doesn't really help them, does it. :-\

Bottom line: YOU have to try it out yourself. The good news is Amazon has an EXCELLENT customer service so you can get it and play with the thing for 30 days. IF you decide it won't work out, you can return it for a refund less return shipping charges. If you feel it's defective, Amazon will replace it without charge -- and will do so without requiring return of the first one before sending a second -- so you can compare side by side. As long as one of them is returned within 30 days, you won't be charged. There are folks here who have gone through several returns before getting one that they are happy with.

And Amazon has been O.K. with that: They want kindle customers happy and buying books! :D
