Oldie but goodie. So very true!  :)
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Love those, and it's so true.

A couple years ago at our local school, an elementary kid brought in one of those gag shock gums, and was suspended ten days for violating the school's weapons policy.

Common sense isn't so common anymore.
Can you imagine having your entire adolescence preserved on the Internet forever via social networking sites and youthful stupidity? Seriously.

1959: Mary unknowingly kisses a boy her friend likes. She loses the friend for a while, but eventually they both move on.

2009: the friend impulsively creates a website, "Mary is a £#@$&" full of embarrassing photos, which is the first google result for her name for the next few years, making it nearly impossible for Mary to find a job post-graduation.

I've actually gotten two - TWO - separate mass emails from friends asking for help in situations like this. (they were each asking for help on behalf of other people.) How crazy is that?
Since we tend to glamorize the nostalgic past....

1959 as I remember it: One of the boys lives in fear of the other one for several years, and the bully grows up to be a beer-swilling wife-beater -- but let's only whisper about that amongst ourselves.

Scenario: Jeffrey won't sit still in class, disrupts other students.

1959 - Jeffrey is sent to the principal's office and given a good paddling. Returns to class, sits still, and does not disrupt class again.

2009 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra state funding because Jeffrey has a disability.
1959 as I remember it: A child with a complex learning disability is summarily classified as "retarded" and put into remedial classes, eventually either drops out of school or if lucky gets to go to vocational school, never becoming functionally literate.

Scenario: Pedro fails high school English.

1959 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.

2009 - Pedro's cause is taken up by local human rights group. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that making English a requirement for graduation is racist. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.
1959 as I remember it: Pedro drops out of school by age 16, gets unskilled labor jobs for the rest of his life, never becoming functionally literate in English.

Scenario: Johnny falls during recess and scrapes his knee. His teacher, Mary, finds him crying, and gives him a hug to comfort him.

1959 - Johnny soon feels better and goes back to playing.

2009 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces three years in federal prison. Johnny undergoes five years of therapy.
1959 as I remember it: Mary is, in fact, a sexual predator, and either successfully hides her fling with Johnny, or if they are found out, she is quietly let go from her current job and is able to move to another school system and get a job, never making the news and nobody ever talking about it openly.

D*mn, why weren't any of my female teachers sexual predators?
Nogdog  That's how I remember it too.

swolf  sexual predators were there back than  only the boys didn't reported it to adults, they bragged about it to their friends  " doing it  with an older woman."

That's still pretty much the way it rolls now. Yeah, it's a double standard but I don't see it going away, pretty much ever.

A girl who does it is a slut. The boy? He's a stud.

Human sexual behavior-and attitudes-reduced to four letter words.
The one man I've known who admitted to being sexually abused by a female pedophile - I mean, that's what we're talking about here, right? Not affairs with boys who have sailed through puberty early, and thus the "only" weirdness is the inherent power differential between an adult and an adolescent? - has pretty much had it ruin his life.

Perceptions are definitely different. I think, in some ways, it might be harder to feel like you're obligated to brag about something terrible that happened to you.

sorry this should have been teenage boys
Good post NogDog.
Despite everything, I do believe that as a society we have moved forward in a good direction. And yes, there is a price to pay for it.
I don't find any of those particularly funny, nor do they ring true to me, although I don't actually "remember" what things were like in 1959.  And as a parent of 2 children with ADHD, I find the description of the "Jeffrey" scenario terribly offensive.  (And no, my kids' schools do not get any extra funding due to the fact that they have a disability.)
Folks, I am going to put my mod hat on and lock this thread and take a minute to discuss it with my fellow mods. While I appreciate that it was meant to be humorous, I feel that the humor is quite mean spirited and has the potential to be harmful and hurtful, as dpinmd has noted.

Edited to add: my fellow mods agree, all that needs to be said has been said and thus, this thread is staying locked.

Thanks,

Leslie
