We celebrated by going for a long hike in our local park, packing a picnic lunch, and finding a secluded grotto to chow down. We basically avoided the entire downtown hoopla of parade and fireworks and the like. Tonight we're having a quiet barbecue and curling up with a movie. Around ten or so we'll go back out to the deck to listen to the fireworks and then go back inside while the drunks drive homeward.

Yay! Happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day!

We spent the day at a local festival, and enjoyed the perfect weather. Just finished listening to the fireworks; the kids were too tired to stay up to go and see them!

Canada Day - (used to be called Dominion Day back when I was a kid) - marks the anniversary of July 1, 1867 - the date that three provinces got together and said "Hey, we ought to start a rock band!"

The three provinces were Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the province of Canada.

The province of Canada consisted of what became known post-confederation as Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec).

To mark this celebration, every year we Canadians take a day off work to eat, make music, drink beer and shoot off some fireworks.

We call it Canada Day to make it different from the other 364 days of the year in which we eat, make music, drink beer and shoot off fireworks.  ;)

Yowza!
