First post, Hi everybody! I've had a my books translated into several languages.
They are childrens picture books with low word counts, so the cost of translation is also low (works out to around $20-30 per 1000 word book.)
I find that Spanish, Japanese and German books all sell reasonably well, but the English speaking market is still the biggest.
I wouldn't recommend using Google translate, that is just asking for bad reviews.

It seems like a great idea, but I don't think you should use Google Translate without knowing Spanish! That's gonna be truly awful. What you could do is try out a few chapters and have a Spanish proof-reader who can help you. If it's chockful of errors, you know you needn't bother.
I am currently doing business with a literary agent from Taiwan who will translate my book into Chinese, which is pretty cool I think :)
