Count Zero here. I'm an HR/Payroll admin for a large technology company here in Texas (Dallas, y'all). I just took the plunge and ordered my Kindle. It won't be arriving until some time in March but after having the chance to play with my boss' Kindle at work I am willing to wait! I never really considered getting anything like it before because I was sure that I'd miss the feel of an actual book. Avid readers will know what I mean -- I love books not just for the content but also as objects themselves, as physical creations of paper and cloth. However, the Kindle is just too cool a gadget to go without. And I'm a bit of a gadget-junkie, anyhow, but the only other like device I've ever encountered (the Sony Reader) just does not impress me at all. After fiddling with it and coming away underwhelmed I sort of gave up on the whole e-reader idea. Like a lot of the critics have said, it seemed like a solution in search of a problem. But after toying with the Kindle my reservations were lifted. Amazon has really done a great job of making this device so much more than just a cool PDA that you read books on (ahem...Sony?). The addition of the keyboard and wireless access are just what was needed to get this doubter on board. I cannot wait to get mine!

Hi there Count Zero and a warm welcome to you.

Believe me, I wondered how I would feel without physically holding a book but it just dawned on me one day when I looked around my home office and saw all the read books piled high and my daughter telling me "please, don't send me anymore books"  I realized that something had to change.  I haven't looked back either  ;D

Welcome Count Zero!  I wasn't sure I'd be able to give up books myself. For me it's not the holding of a book (I find that difficult at times with carpel tunnel) but the smell. I love the smell of a new book and book stores. When I meet a new friend and we end up in a bookstore it always startles them when I start breathing in deeply sniffing the store.  I wish they made a new book smell spray like they do new car. LOL I'd prefer my new car to smell like a new book!!!

Anyway, I love my kindle. It's so much easier to hold and read...and I no longer need reading glasses like I do with regular books! Guess I'll just have to brouse a book store to get my smell fix for now!

Hopefully it will arrive sooner than March. Either way check out the book club section. You can attend even if you don't have your kindle yet and there are some Authors who are going to lead a club for their books!!

Welcome Count Zero! I am a newbie myself - to the boards, not my kindle. I have to tell you that I was really worried that I would miss 'books', but caught myself ordering kindle versions of books I already had in my TBR pile. Everything is just so much easier with the kindle. I did miss the bookstore though, so now I go and look at the books, hold them, get a cup of coffee and order them on my kindle if they are available. Hope your wait will not be too long.

Welcome Count Zero from an ex Dallasite (if there is such a thing LOL)  I am now in Mexico and love my kindle.  I have over a thousand dead tree books, but find myself going to my kindle more and more.  I really need to finish reading those "other things" and passing them on to those who just can't handle the technology.

Hi Count!

I'm new to Kindle too, I lucked out and happened to grab one of the refurbs that they posted so I might actually get mine before my birthday next week!  Have you been on the Amazon's site recently, try to see if you can grab a refurbished one, from what I hear they are just as good as the new ones only $30 less!  I truly hope you will get yours sooner than the March date that they have for all of the new Kindle orders now.  I understand what you mean when you say that it's hard to replace the actual substance and experience of having an actual book as opposed to having a piece of technology but with the "forest" I have collecting dust right now in my living room and bedroom I have to wonder if my feeling is worth all of those dead trees.  I'm glad I broke down and decided to go ahead and order my kindle and I know you're going to enjoy yours too!

Take care!
