Looks like Nathan's gonna self-pub the next one now that he's done with the Jacob Wonderbar things. It's a book on how to publish a novel. I can't help but wonder if the royalties from the Jacob Wonderbar weren't all that great, or if he's self-pubbing, knowing that the people most likely to buy the book are indies.

There are already so many great books from well-known authors on this very subject. I'm sure it will sell, though. With that said, I have to echo Lisa Grace's remarks. It seems odd that he wants to write a guide about how to do something he has never previously done. He even states that he wants help figuring out how to self-publish from those who comment on his blog.

I can't say I would want the book, but perhaps it will be helpful to a newcomer.

I don't believe it's a book on how to self-publish. It's a guide on writing a novel. His middle grade series was trad published, so that counts as something he's previously done.

That makes more sense. Even so, it seems like there are so many "how to write" books out there already. More power to him if it sells, though. :)

The perfect time to do this would be a year ago. I'm sure his fanbase has dropped a bit since he left agenting ... but I guess he still has contacts.

He has a really nice way of writing/blogging that's information-rich and still enjoyable to read.

However, I'm shocked at how much less dirty and filthy self-publishing has become since I started. Dagnabbit, it's practically socially acceptable.

If Nathan's doing it, it has crossed over.

Really?  A book about novel writing?  Do we really need another one of those?  Because there aren't already hundreds of them around.  As for self-publishing.  Well people here know way more about it then he does.  Unless he REALLY starts to educate himself I'm not expecting much success in this endeavor - but I will be watching.

Yeah, his fanbase has dwindled, but I think most of his followers are tradpubbed or folks still trying to tradpub, so... who's he writing for? I might be wrong, though. In any case, writers - especially self-pubbed authors - need craft books. Problem is, there are enough out there already.

For the record, I'm sure repping Chabon didn't hurt his ability to get a tradpub contract.

Good point about his following mostly having been those seeking traditional publishing contracts.

His best advice on the forum (and blog) was always on the subject of getting an agent.

I wish him the best of luck, but yeah, lots of books on the subject already, and his writing experience consists of fairly short middle grade books that haven't sold particularly well.

I'm interested to see how he does!

Very true. After the benchmark setting "Let's Get Digital" and "Don't Be the Monkey" why would anyone else want to do a book on the subject?

But Guy Kawasaki wrote "APE" anyway. Amazing book, BTW, that captures a lot of business dynamics from the last year or so that are pretty new. As fast as things are moving and changing now, "Digital" and "Monkey" are actually a tad dated, but still entertaining and required reading.

If you followed Branford religiously, like I did pre-2011, this is a big shift if he goes through with it. I actually felt bad when I saw my wife had gotten "Kapow" and it was $1.99 from Big Lots. Sure, books gets overruns, returned and wholesaled all the time. Patterson is $1.99 somewhere right now with black sharpie on the page edge as a return. But I can remember when he announced his book deal and when he did his cover reveal, and to see that things didn't go well is a downer.

He was a great guy that put out a lot of effort to help aspring writers. I bet he found a few clients through his blog, as does every agency with a blog or a site, but there was only one Nate Bransford. I wish him all the best.
