Hollywood called. They said your novel’s fit for a film/TV adaptation

I think this is a scenario that most of us writers want. Whether or not your book becomes a bestseller, it catches the attention of Hollywood producers. They give you a call and ask if they can use your book(s) and adapt them into film, TV show, or TV miniseries. It's quite a tempting offer for anyone.

Personally, I'd have mixed feelings if they wanted to use one of my books. On the plus side, it would be incredibly compelling to see the plots and characters that you've created and see them on the big screen or on the flat screen (or on the computer screen if you prefer streaming). Hearing the exact same dialogue that you've created from the mouths of real-life actors (or animated characters) can give anyone Goosebumps. On the minus side, though, I'd be a bit hesitant. There's always a chance that the people from Hollywood would alter a few things in your novel. For example, they might change the original ending (the one that you're satisfied with) into a completely different ending (the one that you might have problems with). Or worse, they might change a character's personality or add (*shutter*) a romantic subplot that didn't even occur in the original novel.

I don't know. It's still a tempting offer, but I'm not sure I'd want them to tamper with the original material.

So if Hollywood asked to use one of your novels for a film/TV adaptation, would you say yes or no? Or would you be 50/50 like me?

I said, "Yes."

It was a no-brainer for me. I like money and I'm not precious about my "vision." The book will always be the book; therefore they can do what they want with it.
First, I'd check the date to verify it wasn't April 1st.

Well, no, not even that.  I'd probably just assume it was a scammer and ignore the voicemail or flag the eMail as spam and be done with it.

What did you say yes to? I agree, I'd take the money and enjoy the ride! But, mine is hypothetical. It sounds like you've already had the experience?
Definitely a yes. I used to be hesitant, but giving it further thought, even if the movie was bad, it's different from the book. And seriously, how many people get to say their book was made into a movie? A definite yes!
I'd have to say yes too. If I said no, the curiosity and wondering 'what if?' would drive me mad! And if it turned out the adaptation was awful, well, the book remains untainted :)

I'd love to be involved in the creative process of seeing it come to fruition as well, though not sure I'd be able to stop myself from getting too neurotic...
Let me put it this way; if the right producer is interested, I'm receptive.

To be purposely vague--because I don't believe in counting chickens before they're fully hatched--a reputable producer wanted to develop my book as a TV series. We talked and talked and talked and I decided my book was in good hands, so I said, "Yes, do it!"

+1 Take the option money and continue writing.

Probably not. I'd love to see my work as a television show or movie, but I'd rather it be something my own team directed and produced. It's one of the many things on my bucket list.
We'd say 'thanks, but no.' We are precious about our vision and we'd have to rule the whole thing with an iron fist, which I doubt they'd be willing to do. Plus too many of our characters would be too hard to translate on screen, if Orlando Bloom being cast as a very blond, fair elf is anything to go by.
I'd say yes. Just having my book optioned would be cool, nice pay day.

Wayward Pines is going to be a series on tv, and that was based off of Blake Crouch's books. He is a self-published author, isn't he? It looks like he not only got a Kindle World but also a series. Congrats to him!

On a different note, I wonder if you wrote a kindle world book if you could end up seeing an adaptation of your story on the series--even though you wouldn't get any credit?
I'd definitely say yes, although since my books are for Young Adults I'd want the movies to be suitable for a general audience.

In the end even if the movie is badly done it will still bring attention to your work and promote it to a wider audience, which will drive book sales. Not to mention whatever deal you made for the movie itself. J.R.R. Tolkien's work has had numerous film adaptations, from cartoons to live action, and none of them seem to have affected people's perception of the books. People tend to have a general understanding that movies based on books are rarely as good as the books themselves, so even if they didn't like the movie they might still be willing to give the book a try.
Hell yes, but I'd make sure to have certain provisions in the contract, like script review.  That's why a strong contract negotiator would be beneficial.
I hope that one day my novel writing allows me to be a bit more picky about where I live so I can move to Vancouver and try and get into TV writing.

As long as the check doesn't bounce, I'm in it all the way.

I'd make sure it wasn't a scam (99% sure it would be). If a miracle occurred and it was legit, my answer wouldn't be yes. It would hell yeah.  8)
