Maybe a silly question but genuinely don't know!

Any advice gratefully received.

I don't know if there is a way to do that.  I just e-mail copies to people.  You can mail it straight to someone's Kindle if you get their Kindle e-mail address.  That is their Kindle username like this: username@kindle.com.  If you send it as a Mobi or PRC it will go right through.  If you send a Word doc or PDF you need to write "convert" in the subject line.  Sometimes the conversions can be a little wonky with the page breaks, etc., but usually not too bad.

When you select the book you want to buy, there is an option on the right, where you usually click to check out, that let's you buy it as a gift.  when that person redeems your 'gift' it counts as a sale.  You can only do it on .com though, there is no facility to do it on .co.uk.  :D

That won't work unless they've authorized YOUR email address as one their kindle can receive from.

Cool! When using .com to gift do I need to give the recipient's kindle e-mail address or just the one that their Amazon account is associated with?
You need an email address for them. It should NOT be their kindle's email address, and does not have to be the email address attached to their Amazon account.

Two things to remember about gifting an ebook:

1) There is no requirement that the recipient apply the "gift card" to your specific ebook. That will be the easiest thing to do based on the structure of the email they receive, but not the only choice. They can spend it on something else if they like.

2) A gifted version does not affect your sales rank regardless of what Amazon tells you (based on extensive testing from KBers).

This has always confused me. So, if I understand this correctly, you can't simply send a mobi file to the recipient's Kindle? And therefore the only way to gift is to actually buy your own book at the regular price and "gift" it using the "gift" icon?

No. But you can send them a mobi file to their email and they can load it however they want.
