How do you deal with finding your book on a free download/pirate site.

I did a google search of my name (vanity) and found a link to download my books for free at mobilism.com.

How does one even begin to deal with that kind of thing?

Send the site a DCMA Takedown Notice.
Thanks Matthew. I'll do that.
I side with Neil Gaiman.

If anyone wants to read my books so badly that they'll rob them, then let them. You can't stop piracy, and if your book is on a pirate site with thousands of others, a reader is no more likely to find your book there than they are on Amazon.

Anyone who has ever given their book away for free via KDP or whatever can't really complain if someone gets you book for free by less clean methods.

Personally, I'm happy to list my books on the pirate sites myself.

I sell so few copies, as do the majority, that piracy isn't the issue, it's getting readers to discover your books in the first place.

Nobody will steal you book if they don't know it exists.

If you do sell a shed load each month, then if a few download pirate copies, then so what? You may find new fans that way.

If you choose to spend your time sending take down notices, then that is your prerogative, just bear in mind you'll be essentially peeing in the wind.

Whenever someone posts a site that is pirating books, I try to sign up (or whatever is necessary) and try to download the book. Obviously I'm not encouraging piracy, but I want to know if it actually works. In this case, I could not download your book (or rather, it got to the point where clicking on the links provided seemed highly foolish and likely to cause viruses, or I had to pay).

So, if that makes you feel better, it seems unlikely a LOT of people will be getting you book from this site.

Also a lot of us spend ages trying to get free promos to work for us.
I consider the piracy site file shares to be free promos where someone else is doing all the work.
Bang on! And it kind of comes with recommendation if someone reviews it on that site and posts ''yeah it's a good read''.. means you will get more downloads and eventually, more customers.

Music bands use those sites to do actual album launches so there are ways to use it to your benefit. ;)

You're right. I tried to download the books from both links provided and all I got were pop-up windows and invitations to download binary files (viruses). So I think I'll just let it be.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Those links do work. They just make it complicated to navigate in order to have the user/thief click the ads first.
What you can do it contact the 2 servers that host your books (not the mobilism forum but the actual sites that host your book file) and ask them to take it down. They will take them down within a couple of hours if they get a notice.
You will have to include the link to where the book is stored in your message. Just click the "report abuse" link usually found at the bottom of the sites.

I shrug and go about my day.
I agree. It's a book and hell, if they want it that bad, go for it.
Not to say its okay but you can't stop them. On will be shut down, another springs up.
I send DMCA notices like they're going out of style.  Maybe they are, but whatever.  I am strongly anti-piracy over here in my house.
