Hunter's Daughter -- a tense, poetic mystery of the Arctic

Northern Quebec, 1964. Mountie Jack McLain, baffled by a series of unsolved murders, knows the latest case will make or break his career. Eighteen-year-old Nilliq, chafing under the sullen power of her father in a remote hunting camp, risks flight with a headstrong shaman bent on a mission of his own. Their paths intersect in this tense mystery charting a journey of personal and cultural transformation.

"Beautifully written, atmospheric, fully developed characters."

Hunter's Daughter, released in March 2015 by Five Rivers, creates an authentic atmosphere like that of the award-winning film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001) or Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997), based on Peter Hoeg's bestseller. The novel recreates the culture of the Eastern Arctic at a pivotal point of transition, melding themes of aboriginal values and assimilation, along with emerging women's issues. The plot features both vivid action and in-depth character development.

"Sharp writing, tense plot, deliciously detailed cultural and environmental surround. Speaks with authority about the ambiguities of culture and region."

The novel draws on my own experience and research in Quebec Inuit villages, where I worked as a teacher in the late 1970s. The students in my classes were among the first generation of their people to grow up in settlement houses, and I was privileged to accompany them on journeys on the land, hunting and camping in the traditional ways.

"I love the simplicity of your style, and how that bareness of words (like the bareness of the environment) captures so much mood and evokes tension."

Until May 1st I can offer free copies of the ebook to anyone interested in reading it and posting a review on Amazon.

A brief recap of our rules follows:

--Please bookmark this thread (using your browser's bookmark/favorite function or the Kboards bookmark tool available on each thread) so you can update it as we ask that authors have only one thread per book and add to it when there is more information. --While you may respond to member posts to your thread at any time, you may only bump your thread (back-to-back posts by you) once every seven days. Once you've responded to a member, that resets the clock to zero and you must wait seven days to post, unless another member posts before then.

--We ask that Amazon reviews not be repeated here as they are easy to find at your book link. Also, full reviews from other sites should not be posted here, but you may post a short blurb and a link to the full review instead.

--Although self-promotion is limited to the Book Bazaar, our most successful authors have found the best way to promote their books is to be as active throughout KBoards as time allows. This is your target audience--book lovers with Kindles! Please note that putting link information in the body of your posts outside the Book Bazaar constitutes self promotion; please leave your links for your profile signature that will automatically appear on each post.
