I need a good ghost story!

The last, and one of the few, ghost stories I read was The Haunting of Hill House.  I think it was great!!  I love a good ghost story, but can't seem to find any I think may be good.  Any suggestions?  Could be a classic or new/newer book as long as it's good and thrilling.  I don't like blood and guts, but I do love a chilling, suspenseful ghost story, could be a little horror thrown in.  Thanks in advance for anything you can suggest.  Oh, I also read The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, but did not really turn out to be a ghost story (was good though).

Rebecca  or  lots of different stories by Poe (especially if you just want creepy and not necessarily ghosts- but Fall of the House of Usher is ghosty)
You could try Mystery Of Udolpho - but that was a little silly even for me :) Castle of Otranto was easier to take seriously :)
The Woman in Black is a pretty good classic Haunted House story

And of course the original Gaston Leroux story of the Phantom Of the Opera

I read an interesting one on my kindle, want to say it was a January release: The Drake House, by Kelly Moran. I still remember things about that story and those characters, and I probably read three books a week.  ;D

When I saw this topic I immediately thought of "Dark Matter" by Michelle Paver, and I see now it's already been mentioned. Somewhat slow-burning but definitely creepy and the suspense keeps on building throughout. Really enjoyed it.

And also The Little Strange by Sarah Waters, if you like those is-it-real-or-in-her-head kind of ghost stories.
For what may be the very first is-it-real-or-in-her-head ghost story, try this:

The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, from way back in 1898.

I don't see Dark Matter on Kindle. Am I missing it?

"Ghost Story" is a good one, as someone else mentioned.  "The Shining" is a great haunted hotel story.  Richard Matheson's "Hell House" and "Stir of Echoes" are also excellent ghost stories.

The only ghost story that really creeped me out was Richard Matheson's Hell House. The title was off putting but the story revolves around this mansion that is haunted by many ghosts. It was fascinating and I had to read it with the lights on every night.

If you're interested in a shorter one:

More evil house than ghost story:

And probably my fave ghost story, ever! (Has the least gore.)

I almost mentioned The House Next Door, but I thought maybe it was stretching the definition of 'ghost story' a bit too far. Great book though. Some of the others you mention look intriguing, I'll have to investigate them...

Have you read the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz? Odd sees ghosts and there's always mystery, suspense, and the occasional horror moment. The Haunting of Hill House is my all-time favorite ghost story. Second is Talisman. It's not really a ghost story, but it does have this in and out of dimension thingy that is quite compelling. Oh, and I second the nomination for Peter Straub's Ghost Story.
