Did you try paging it? Even if he didn't have the "find my phone" app (which does work for ipods) you can go to icloud.com and log on and page it unless it's turned off or dead. My daughter lost hers about a year ago, we think my nephew or daughter threw it in the trash and it went to the dump. I do hope you find his or an inexpensive one!
