with Canada with regards to the ITIN application form.

Anyone know it offhand?

They had a webpage  there which should have provided the number... but that page was taken down.

If not, I'll call one of these toll free numbers.

In my talks with the IRS lady, she told me that on the 'reason' section you tick (a) and (h) and under (h) you put 'Exception 1D Royalties'. The country is 'Canada' and the treaty article number is XII.

I still haven't received my ITIN (or notice of rejection) so I don't know if that will work. You can do a search for Canada-US tax treaty and you will find royalties under Article XII, though.

Oh, and the certified copy of your ID: You can't get certified by a Canadia Notary Public. Apparently Canada (or it's notary assn) hasn't signed some sort of treaty. I took my passport in to the passport office to get a certified copy. Yeah, I had a lot of fun with the W-7. Also, you need the letter from a company in the States stating that you will be receiving money from them. Got mine from Smashwords -- took long enough to get the $10 in royalties that they want.

There are 3 lawyers in Edmonton that handle ITINs as per the IRS's recommended list, so I'm just getting one of those to do it all for me. No way am I mailing my passport away. In one case, a friend was without hers for six months and they still rejected her claim and she had to resend her forms.

I think there is one lawyer in Halifax, if that's close to your...

Also, an important note: you can use the ITIN number for various places. So, my publisher gave me the letter (thus not needing to use smashwords). However, I can use the number for Smashwords AND my publisher, allowing me to continue working the way that suits me the best. The lawyer said I need to use it at least once every 5 years, but since I'll be paid royalties at least annually, I'm in the clear.

I ended up using an acceptance agent for this. (http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96839,00.html)

I tried on my own and it failed, even though the application was filled out correctly. It was worth the money to use the agent.

Thanks for the link. If my latest attempt fails, I'll go this route.

Yup, I opted I skip even trying from the feedback I'd gotten. Mine is $120 (or, was it $125? I forget) and I know it's all done and my passport stays with me.

My advice: go with the agent. I had sent my passport along with my original application. They almost lost my passport and I had to phone in countless times to get help trying to find it once they rejected my application. It took over 2 months to get it back.

Is all that crap worthwhile? If they hold 30% I can claim that as taxes paid when I fill in my next tax return, and so possibly get some back from Revenue Canada surely?

Yep, got all that. Thanks DA. I have my letter from Amazon. Unfortunately, living on the island here, I don't have access to an embassy, consulate, or passport office, so I'll have to actually send my passport with the application.

Just hope I get it back. :)
Call up the Passport office and see what hoops you might have to jump through in order to get a certified copy without showing up in person.
