Until about 10 minutes ago, the short story was dying. Magazines are not the viable market they once were and that's where a whole lot of writers got their starts. Stephen King's generation and earlier relied on them until they got the book deal. It was becoming a lost art until -- yeah, I feel like a boot licker saying it -- ereaders came along and gave writers an opportunity to have an audience for the stories.
