I really liked your post.  Yes, it is hard for some of us to see astronomical numbers, especially when many of us are told that anyone can do the same.  You certainly put it in perspective and now I no longer have to drive myself nuts wondering why I'm doing so poorly. It would be such a short drive anyway. 

I particularly loved your last paragraph.  It really gets right to the heart of what writing is all about.    Well done!

I loved this blog post. And I'm glad to hear you love writing again. (I'm sorry to hear you quit for seven years.) Writing should be fun, as you said. I love that as authors we can now make choices about our future, and write what we enjoy. It shouldn't be about the numbers.

I agree that comparing your numbers to others can make you crazy.  (It may, however, be inspirational to see some of those numbers-- just don't allow it to create unreasonable expectations.)  I will say that my own sales numbers matter to me quite a lot (the oldest kid will be going to college in a year, yikes), but no one should get into writing only to make money.  Writing is something I do because I have to, and because it's fun.  Making money at it is a nice side benefit, though.

The blog post was very inspirational. July has been totally dead for me after having a great selling month in June. My spirits were down in the dump and I didn't even feel like writing on my current novel. Watching Sales number can be annoying to say the least, and the last two weeks with only 3 sales has really helped me back off from checking the number, and concentrate on writing. I took a break from KB, Facebook, Twitter and all thing social and just wrote. Now I feel like I have my inspiration and MOJO back LOL. Finished the book I was currently working on, it's live and up as of yesterday, and I've already sold 2 copies!! Taking pleasure in the small things LOL. 2 certainly isn't 1,000, but I've made a promise to myself to stop comparing my books to other peoples and JUST WRITE

As I said in the comment I just left on your blog, keeping things in perspective, and not focusing entirely on the numbers, is key to eliminating much of the angst. As for swashbucklers, how wonderful that indie publishing has made it possible once again for all of us who love these books, and your writing, to read them again!
