OK, I'm not sure if this is applicable, but as I set aside times to read and post on here and am continually faced with an unavailable site I was wondering if this is just me, or other authors too. (Like this morning, down for about an hour).

It's never for too long and it's often weird times of the day so sometimes I'm affected, and at others its just a 'meh' and I carry on with something else.

I know it's a big site, and I know that maintenance is often required. However, shouldn't this be properly 'managed' rather than the frequent and haphazard downing of the site?

Yup, it's happened a few times that the site is down. I have to assume it's the hosting service that is having trouble. Which is common. Unless you invest into quite expensive services, you are likely to experience occasional down-time.

I think it's not too big of a problem because the members here are more long-term and aren't deterred by experiencing the occasional downtime.

I missed out on some valuable procrastination this morning because the site was down.

The only time this was really annoying was when someone had kindly put up a link to a writer's tool which I had planned to download in my lunch hour and then couldn't due to down time. I survived, however.

KBoards usually comes back up again, so I just shrug it off and decide to procrastinate later. Like now, for example.

KB has always been up and down for me. Off the top of my head, seems to be down most commonly around 10 or 11am (GMT), in case that helps diagnose any issue. Definitely some bigger issue happening this morning, but there is an ongoing one too...

Me too, I had scheduled a solid 30 minutes to it before writing but had no choice but to put fingers to keyboard and start typing away instead, what a drag. I'm doing my morning procrastination now instead, take that, work.

Folks,

apologies for the downtime you've experienced!

It would help us research the issue if you could give us the times it goes down for you.  I don't have access to the information Harvey has (so I'm sending him a flare) but I know there was a timeout this morning at around 2:20am EDT--not the normal time here for a problem.  Otherwise, I'm not seeing a major downtime this morning based on the limited reporting I receive.

I also know that there's a slow down/downtime around 3AM EDT due to our daily backups.  I know Harvey is working on an improvement to that process that should help.

Betsy, I get the problem at different times. This maybe because I have experienced them in Greece (one timezone, UK (another timezone) and Spain ( a different timezone).

I will try and log them from now on.

Normal time:

When Aus has daylight saving, but US does not: 7pm E. Aus time.
When Aus has no daylight saving but the US does: 5pm Aus time
In between: 6pm

It really is that regular. Not today, though. Today had more and longer outages than usual.

Thank you for starting this thread and mentioning this because I thought something was wrong with my pc or browser, I am getting this nearly every 3 or 4 days. I get this message:

Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

I'm adding this, i just tried to save my comment on another thread and it took just over 30 seconds for the post to save, this website is slow to browse through. I got this message just now:

Uh-oh. Our server has reported an error condition. We've automatically alerted the site administrator about this error. (If you think you have additional information that might be helpful, you can email [email protected])

Wait a few seconds and then try to access KBoards again. Sometimes this error can occur if our board gets overwhelmed with too many people accessing it at the same time.

If the problem persists, please accept our apologies. Rest assured that our admin staff are working on it. If your Kindle's handy, sit back and read a few pages, while we try to get things sorted out.

Thanks for visiting KBoards.
