So, I've heard a few other authors talk about serializing a novel or series for KDP select to take advantage of KU and collecting the shorter works into a Collected Edition to distribute wide--has anyone had any problems doing this and getting slapped for violating KDP Select exclusivity? DOES this violate it since strictly speaking the stories are the same its just the formatting thats different?

If the pieces are in Select, then you can't put the collection anywhere but Amazon.
Some people publish the individual parts of a series in Select, but don't put the collection in, so that a KU reader can borrow the shorter parts, but not the more expensive collection.
Maybe this is what you have heard people around here talking about?

could you elaborate on what the difference is between these two examples? I'm not seeing how they're actually different =/

for the sake of argument let's say I wanted to put out discreet short stories that are part of a series (each story has a beginning, middle and an end but isnt a long novel). Could i publish the shorts in KU and the collected edition wide or no? an example would be like Sherlock Holmes: lots of discreet shorts and collected Volumes.

No. If you put short stories in Select, then even if you put the shorts in a different book, you can't put it wide. Amazon will slap you. You can put the omnibus on Amazon -- and not put it in Select -- but you cannot put it wide.
