This seems to be a Beta test -- I wonder how many books they're allowing into this program? And what price range is eligible?

I would think this wouldn't make sense to offer a discounted rental price if a book is already priced at $2.99 or even $5.99. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

The Digital Reader has explained that this book is likely part of the Kindle textbook lending program that Amazon started in 2011. It is published by Princeton University Press and is in the political humor and political history and theory category. There is probably some college class out there somewhere that uses parts of this book - even though it doesn't look like what you would typically consider a "textbook."

That was my first thought when I saw it; that it was part of the academic rental program.

Bummer, I didn't think of that. I would have loved book rentals.

I think if paid rentals started, there would be a lot more publicity.  And I think it could happen, that there could be a fee-based lending program.  Prime is sort of a foot in the door....

Wonder what kind of impact, if any, pirating may have on this program if/when it launches?  Like, how are the books going to be stored on the Kindle?  And, will breaking the DRM on them basically provide the renter with a non-timed copy of the file...

I would think it's just borrowing using money so no different from library use.

I guess this would be great if you just knew you weren't going to re-read the book. But I'm more of a I'd-rather-own-it type of person. I don't buy much in the way of mp3 music for the same reason - give me a CD so I can rip it and load it to whatever whenever I want!
