Kindle: Last night in a restaurant...

Someone rushed up to me and was like Oh! my God!! Oh my God!! That's the Kindle...Oh! my God!! Where did you get that? Do you have any more? Oh pleeease can I see it? Oh, can you download a sample...pleeease. When she saw how fast the sample downloaded I thought she was going to faint on the spot and I was going to brush up on my rusty CPR skills.

Oh my God...look at that size 6 text...Holy Sh#@!! Her voice was actually in singsong mode and shrill from excitement. Oh my God...That's AWESOME...I saw it on Oprah and want one for my daughter so bad for Christmas; she reads all those vampire series. How did you get it? It's sold out!! I told her I had it before Oprah's airing. Oh..my God!! It is so much better than the Sony...Oh, my God. I've been eyeballing the Sony...but this makes it look sick. Oh my God!!

It was hysterically funny...although, I think at this point, God probably wants to change his name...lol.

It was funny:  I must admit, I did feel a bit like Tippi Hedren in Hitchcock's the birds.
I spent the entire morning yesterday in a busy medical waiting room, reading from my wife's Kindle while she was with the doctors. To my dismay, nobody asked me a single question. Could it have something to do with my:

A. Gender
B. Appearance
C. Demeanor

Or, contrary to the road signs, are Texans unfriendly folks? <No hitting>
I know what you mean.  I was at the eye doctor and expected to be asked about it.  Many of the folks in the waiting room were not native English speakers; maybe that had something to do with it.  It can't be the Texas thing as I'm in Virginia. :)

The doc did say he'd seen several patients with them. . . .

No one has ever asked about mine.  I'm almost to the point of seeking annoying places just to be asked about it.
I was asked just once, also while eating out (at a lunch deli). I go there often enough that the server knows me, and he's the one who asked me about it. I've had people look curiously at it but no one else has said anything yet - and I've yet to see another Kindle in the wild. I know there's at least one other in my little town but we haven't crossed paths yet.

NPR did a story on the publishing industry this morning and the topic of e-readers came up. The person they were interviewing sort of dismissed them as a minor market component, mostly used by subway riders and business travelers. Obviously she's not clued into the whole restaurant user group (let alone this community!) You can find the story on the NPR website, on the Weekend Edition Saturday page (there's a link to a related story from a few days ago at the bottom of the page too). I'll see if I can post the link directly but being new this whole forum thing I'm not sure if it'll work:

Well I went out out to eat at a Golden Corral buffet style restaurant.  I left the Kindle in the car.(see my earlier post :) )
So how do you guys manage to go out and not have people ask about your kindle.  I think I've only managed that once or twice.  I have demonstrated mine in restaurants, at work - mine and affiliate agencies, on planes, in airports, in line at the movies, at Starbucks many times, the local fairs, the grocery store and my personal favorite, waiting in line for the bathroom at a concert (it was a long line).  In fact, where I was the only customer in Starbucks I ended up showing my kindle to the staff.  As much as I love my kindle and enjoy showing it to people, there are times I just want to finish a chapter.  That being said, I never turn anybody down and I don't resent the intrusion.
I was shocked I went to the book store with mom...and I was reading my kindle in the cafe as mom shopped. No one asked about the kindle. This is the first time its happened in a bookstore. Still its kinda good cuz I actually got to read

The "Ask Me About MY Kindle and Die" tee shirt may have something to do with it. :)
best way to avoid kindle interuptions....I wear earphones, even if I'm not listening to music, and people don't really bother me.

I guess I do have a bit of an unapproachable aura around me. ;D I guess I'll just be happy that I can read in peace.

Well if your screen name is any indication of the real you, you may be a little intimidating. :)
