Kobo Rocks!

So someone from Kobo contacted me directly recently - first time this has happened - I won't say who in case s/he wishes to remain anonymous, but s/he can always fess up here - and gave me some great pointers on how to set up my metadata better. Frankly, I haven't been concentrating much on Kobo because for sales, it's always been overshadowed by Apple and Nook, among the non-Amazon vendors.

So with the metadata tips, such as making sure the country-specific prices were set to proper charm pricing (3.99 instead of 4.12, for example), plus getting all our books switched to Kobo direct (pulling off of Smashwords (sorry, Mark Coker, but we get a lot more control and a little more money this way)), plus a BookBub promo this month, plus a Kobo-specific promo for one of the book entry points, plus getting onto the front of the free book page for another entry point (for who knows how long but it's great while it lasts), our sales for this month are up huge over the average - looking like probably 10x (1000%) -ish by the end of the month. This will exceed Nook sales and is getting close to Apple sales.

Will this surge get sustained traction, or will it fall back down? Who knows, but I'm stoked anyway, because besides the raw increase, for the first time we've sold books in some crazy cool places: South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Belgium (near to my heart because I was stationed there for 3 years prepping for WWIII), Singapore...who knew?

As I'm a big proponent of going wide, I'm tremendously glad to see the wisdom of doing so validated with sales. Rock on, Kobo!

(Oh, and I often say "we" because my lovely and talented wife did all the hard work with getting the files moved over and validated. We're a team. Or an LLC. Something like that. Rock on, my dear!)

Hey David -- congrats on going wide and getting contacted by Kobo!

What's involved in going direct to Kobo? I'm a Canuck and I've often wondered about going direct but D2D has always been so easy. My sales on Kobo do not come close to Apple or B&N so it's never been a priority.
I've been targeting Kobo users with Facebook ads for the last two weeks. Did not do much, but I'm still working to grow sales there.  I think they are well positioned to be a very big player, but I have not figured out how to get traction there yet.
Thanks for this, David.  I'm on a mission to improve my Kobo sales, at the very least sell a few copies in North America and Europe.  All of my Kobo sales have been in Australia, Asia and Africa.  As cool as that is, I'd to see bigger blue dots on my Kobo map.  I'd definitely like to be able to adjust my country-specific pricing.
I like Kobo, and I'm having my best month there. But I wish they would let me know if I'm in or out of their monthly promos. Some months I'm accepted - but I don't know that until I see the sales happen. Some months I'm not in, and I don't know why. Makes it harder to plan strategy when you have no idea in advance whether or not your books are on sale.

Besides that, I can never actually find the promos themselves on the store. Do they hide them? It's like the free first in series page. I assume I have a book on that because it does well, but I've never been able to find that page.

Come to think of it, I never get their promo emails as a customer, either. Used to, then they just stopped. Yet I do get the invites. Weird. Perhaps Kobo likes messing with my head.
Is there a way to GET into monthly promos?

I've been trying to get any traction in Kobo, but of the three-- Nook, iTunes and Kobo-- I have the least success there.  The only place I get less action is Google Play.  Even Smashwords is selling better.

If you're direct, they send out invites each month with a link to the application form.

I'm direct. I don't get any emails from them.

EDIT:

I take that back. I just never read their monthly newsletter.
I'm fairly sure I at least glance through the newsletter but I've never seen a form.
I just have to add that I agree Kobo rocks. I'm in the process of going direct with them instead of using SW or D2D and not only is the interface incredibly simple and easy to use, but I've appreciated the customer service I've received regarding questions I had. Wow. That's all I have to say about that.

Now...fingers crossed I start gaining some traction over there! :)

Also, for authors located in the US who have gone direct with Kobo, how does the tax information side of things work? I found a spot to enter my bank information, but not my tax information. What happens come tax time? Anything I need to be prepared for form wise?
Echoing that Kobo is great and very supportive of us indies. I've had books included in their promos as well and currently I'm having my best month ever at Kobo.
I love their monthly promotions. I always shift a few copies when they go live. Also, I love reaching a more global audience than at Amazon. I sold a book in Jamaica this month. Only one, but it's still cool. :)
Thanks for this. It is on my list of things to do. Maybe I should do it sooner than the "later" I planned.

Agree that Kobo rocks, I've had nothing but good experiences with them and their people. I'm currently the Mystery/Thriller pick of the month in the free category and the ad they run is great.

Sales-wise though they do fall into third and forth. Getting traction using a permafree is proving to be difficult. I have to agree with this from Leanne;

"Besides that, I can never actually find the promos themselves on the store. Do they hide them? It's like the free first in series page. I assume I have a book on that because it does well, but I've never been able to find that page."

That free page is just too hard to find for most users. I ran a blog post telling the world my book was featured on the free page and I got email asking where to find it. One person said the easiest way they found was to Google "free kobo books". If they would just make it more visible I think the sales would follow.

As for the store and interface, top notch. I see nothing really holding them back from being a major competitor to Amazon. But there's this ONE THING. If that ONE THING would just be fixed everyone with a permafree would see a major jump in sales.

Frustrating. Kobo is like that kid you see with all the talent and skills, yet they just won't try out for the team. That's a joke but there's a bit of truth in it. I can't help but think that there's someone there who still feels FREE cannibalizes sales, even when all the evidence points the other way.

I do love that blue map with all the dots though. :)

Kobo DOES rock, I agree. Mark Lefebvre is really approachable. He helped me out when I reduced price for a Bookbub email blast and it got stuck at Kobo. With only hours to spare before BB sent the mail, he went into Kobo through his super secret backdoor and fixed it. He was at a convention using his laptop and a hotspot at the time!

I like Kobo and even though I tend to ignore it (them), I do get some sales there. I suspect that their reluctance to promote free is because some authors have used them only for their free books as a means to get Amazon to price-match to free. Those authors then run a promo for the Amazon free book and the rest of their series on Amazon, and don't promote to Kobo. So I'm not surprised that they are gun shy on the free book thing - they're getting burned on it. If I was them, I would only allow free books if you are exclusive on Kobo.

Now, if only they would sell audio books.
I like Kobo. But I get maybe one download of my freebie a day, and 0 sales on my second book. Granted, I've only been wide since Feb and Direct w/ them for a few weeks. I sincerely hope they pick up because Kobo has so much potential.
David, can you share with us the pointers on metadata? If it's a secret, then no worries  ;)

I've tried promos, blurb changes, even updating the covers, but nothing has worked at Kobo... I used to see a handle full of sales but now all I see are crickets... I would love to boost some visibility there...

It's not a secret. Mark Lefebvre often tells us to change prices to end .99 for each territory in the Kobo podcast. He has mentioned it on SPP as well, and on the Kobo blog. There are other things, all obvious stuff, like using the boxes given to us for series title, series number, etc. Preorders are a big thing for him atm as well. If you listen to the last SPP podcast he was in (I think it was SPP) he talks about it. It might have been Joanna's Creative Penn... I'm not sure.

The meta data is the same for all stores not just Kobo. You should never let the automatics set your prices. Always end in .99 or .49 and remember that Canada is Kobo's biggest sales area. $1 more than Amazon is normal. So for example despite conversion rates, I always set my $4.99 amazon books to $5.99 for Canada. The other territories I look at the conversion and round up to 0.99. Once set they STAY set, and don't keep fluctuating all over the scale due to currency variations. Obvious stuff I know, but imagine a reader's feeling if they buy a book for 4.56 today, and tomorrow it drops to 4.06 and then bounces all over the joint.

Choose a price you're comfortable with a SET it there.

Set the price and forget it I say.
