So ... had a weird thing happen a few days ago. I'd borrowed a book from the library. Actually had downloaded it to several of my Kindles. For a variety of reasons, (mostly being cataract surgery which went very well, but for a few weeks there I wasn't reading as much) I knew I wasn't going to finish it before it expired and that it would disappear from the kindles that have WiFi on consistently. Which I do so that everything can sync up.
But as I only rarely use the Kobo, (mostly for when a library book only has an ePub edition available) I decided to download it there as well and then turn WiFi off. I figured that way when it went 'poof' on my kindles I'd be able to pick it up on the Kobo. I mean, it had worked the week before when I was reading the latest Cormoran Strike; at nearly 1000 pages, I didn't get it finished before it expired. (Which is also part of the reason I was late starting the next one.
)
You can imagine my surprise -- and dismay -- when I picked up the Kobo the day after it was officially 'returned' and found that I could not read it!
WiFi was definitely off, but it was showing as 'expired'.
Somehow, there must have been a timer or something on it.
Then, in a discussion in a FB group (Historical Fiction Book Lovers) the issue came up and I mentioned the 'hack' we all know about regarding leaving the wifi off and how it hadn't worked recently on Kobo. Someone else said it was now also not working on Kindle!
So, finally, my question: have any of y'all noticed this?
If it's a thing, it's definitely new. I do feel like there was a recent update, but when I look on my Scribe and PW Signature, the latest version is dated from July. If it IS a New Thing, I'm sort of hoping that it won't work on my Voyage, but it might be an encoding in the overdrive/Library files. I have some other library books borrowed, so I'll do some experimenting.
I can't REALLY complain as it was always a loophole. But it is a bit of a bummer.
